The question now is how to fix what was not supposed to be broken?

Normally after an under-achieving season you see the coach get canned, or big player movement. Rarely do you see nothing happen...I'm afraid we might see a whole bunch of nothing.

Ideally, I'd trade Spezza for whatever you can, and move forward. I have this fear that we'll do a bunch of nothing (maybe sign Hemsky), and hope for the best. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

The last thing I think we'll see is a MacLean firing.

Re-signing Hemsky and keeping Spezza go hand in hand. They keep both or they move Spezza and Let Hemsky re-sign elsewhere.

Honestly after watching the last couple of weeks, I have changed my tune, I think they need to do very little. The team will be stronger after the adversity of the last two years.

*side note: Clarke MacArthur may never get considered for the captaincy, but you are kidding yourself if you don't think he is one of the team leaders right now. Love his game this year, especially lately. The guy is going all out trying to make things happen.

So after watching the team totally fall apart these last two weeks, you are convinced that just time is needed to right the ship?

1. I think you need to go into next year with Lehner. Give him the ball because MacLean won't stop giving Anderson the net for better or worse. He has a lot of maturing to do still but IMO you let him grow with the team. It's just one less thing MacLean and the Sens have to worry about. Get a capable backup to support Lehner, a guy like Guftasson perhaps that knows how to play the backup role, support the #1, and can come in and play good hockey. Hopefully they can move Anderson for a 2nd from a team like Vancouver or Calgary who will need a #1 next year.

2. Get some muscle up front, get some character and skill, be harder to play against. Stewart again should be a target and IMO Methot will be the player to land him. Need a Chris Stewart a lot more than a Marc Methot.

3. Drop some dead weight and that's def Condra and Kassian at this point. Give those spots to guys who have a future in Ottawa.

I could be totally out to lunch but that's how I see it. As for the way they play, simple. Need to be harder to play against and need more structure.

If you're resigning Hemsky you are keeping Spezza, that's for sure.

The biggest thing that happened this year was screwing with the goaltending the one time it was really working.  Take that option away from MacLean and give the reigns to Lehner.  He has now put 4, 5 years into the organization, done everything asked, and proven he can be a very good goaltender over very long stretches.  He's a guy that needs to play and even if he might not be there maturity wise yet or emotionally he's a guy that needs to play.  Let him grow in the position with the ups and downs of it.

Regarding Spezza, get rid of him. I don't care how good he looks with Hemsky, how many years have we watched him here? We will never ever win anything with him, unless he's on the IR. He doesn't give a flying Diddle.

The team is still letting in too many shots against, regardless who is in goal.  If the goalie isn't having a good game, chances of winning aren't good.  PK sucks too, which perhaps tell you not enough players who strong defensively.

So many epic brain farts in our own end this year, it's either the players or whatever convoluted system the coaches are preaching has the players all confused.

This is our season in a nutshell:

Sheer comedy, by the worst(and overplayed) line on the team, 14-15-25.

This season was full of a whole bunch of mess. The team looked so lost at times on the ice. Mistakes, bad decisions, missed assignments, weak on the puck, no real feel for a team that is playing together. A lot of WTF moments.

Gotta be one of the most frustrating seasons for Sens fans in a while...

Mendes wrote a fun article recapping the 10 games that cost us the season:

That 6-3 loss to the Leafs before the Olympic break really stood out to me at the time. It was the point when I figured that the playoffs were a pipe dream. Can't show that lack of emotion and compete in such a critical game against a rival.

honestly if that's all it takes to screw with this team by switching goaltending , this team was very week to start with.
you're not giving them enough responsibility for what translated. they should of been able to bounce back from that sort of moves.
I think it goes deeper.

yes there needs to be moves this season. what are they? it's really hard to tell. will BM have the balls to trade spezza? probably not. will they trade Anderson? I hope not, not until the trade deadline. i'd rather keep him and roll that he can bounce back and if he can't you give the ball to lehner. I agree that Lehner should be playing more but maybe that was the fault of bringing him up from the AHL. yeah he performed well there but was he mentally ready for the big show? i dunno...
trading Methot? again, I dunno if that's a good idea. he's the most stable defensive D we have.
I'd offer Hemsky a contract even if we move spezza. at this point with his creativity you put him on a line with Zib and that might help Zib out.
i just hope he doesn't catch the injury bug again.

Big question mark, Bobby Ryan. probably won't hit the 30 goal mark, he can't be too happy about that. you gotta have a heart to heart with him and see what he thinks. i doubt he gets traded but i doubt he signs a contract this summer unless they are throwing money at him like he just scored 40. because at any rate he's gonna try to score that next year to get a new contract.

so many question marks going into next season.
I think we still need a vet top 4 D-man a la Boyle or edler to come in and help stabilize things. we are way too young on the back end.

Ryan is hurt. Look at his hit totals game by game, and it's clear he got hurt along the way. He was hitting consistently before it.

The best:

Are we doing this? Ok then:

Anderson sucks: his numbers are clearly worse than last year.
Lehner sucks: see Anderson, Craig.

Cowen sucks: we were clearly expecting more out of him this year
Methot sucks: been a healthy scratch this year, healthy-scratched players suck.
Phillips sucks: Old man is old, he's terrible on the PP.
Ceci sucks: only 7 points and a -2 in 35 games? For a mid 1st rounder? Bust.
Wiercioch sucks: Healthy scratch numerous times throughout the year, only bad players get Healthy-Scratched.
Gryba sucks: his Oct-Nov was putrid, was better last year
Karlsson sucks: won the Norris trophy 2 years ago, has clearly regressed since then
Corvo sucks: We knew this already. Nothing new here.

Ryan sucks: see this thread
Turris sucks: 26 points in his last 42 games? He was WAY better before that. Bust.
Michalek sucks: knees are done, -21, less than half ppg.
Greening sucks: -15, 15 points on the year. Self evident.
Smith sucks: Was way better in 2011, is -9, only has 7 assists all year.
MacArthur sucks: 5 points in his last 13 games? Not even a half PPG for a supposed top-6 winger, PLUS he's been injured lately as well? Why bother?
Spezza sucks: LOLdrop-passes, -22, not captain material
Condra sucks: only 13 points, still a minus player. Pass.
Neil sucks: -9, 12 points when he was once a 33 point winger. He's done.
Kassian sucks: look, you're not going to make me explain this, are you?
Hoffman sucks: if he was good, he'd have been an NHL player before his 24th birthday. Also - 2 points in 11 games. Waste of a 5th rounder.
Hemsky sucks: used to be a 70+ point guy, only had 20 last year.
Zibanejad sucks: can't even break the top-6 as a center, -12 on the year

Every prospect sucks: if they didn't, they'd be on the team by now
Maclean sucks: Neil on the ice as an extra skater
Reeds & Cameron sucks: they switched offensive and defensive responsibilities mid-season
Murray sucks: took a cup team and turned it into a non-playoff team.
Melnyk sucks: no $$$
Dean Brown sucks: SCRAMBLE is old, get a new catchphrase, you dinosaur
Potvin sucks: rambles about nonsensical things.
Mendes sucks: not controversial enough, and is boring
Simmer sucks: he's crazy and an idiot
TGOR sucks: well, duh.
Spartacat sucks: lion mascot is cheesy, no discernible relation to "senatorial" theme.
CTC sucks: it's not downtown
Ottawa sucks: no-fun city
Canada sucks: shovelling snow is a pain in the Donkey
North America sucks: Europe did it better
Planet Earth sucks: pollution levels are WAY worse than it's career-best numbers in 3000 B.C.E.
Our Solar System sucks: it's CRAZY-far from the rest of our galaxy, out on the fringe.
The Milky Way sucks: it is literally warped by two larger galaxies that "sandwich" us. Other galaxies are better, they exert their dominance on us consistently and thoroughly.
All of existance sucks: because Bobby Ryan sucks.

... there. I've covered every single possible "(Player X) Sucks" thread.

You're welcome.

A lot of those actually are true.
