Why should Phillips go?  He's a bottom pairing D man who's still a better option than Cowen.  Nothing wrong with Phillips playing with Ceci for a year or two more.

I would have been fine with him for 1 year, but in year 2 he will be one of 6 LH D men fighting for 4 jobs all with 1 way contracts.

Cowen can only get better.

Phillips can only get worse. He hasn't been very good since A-train left town.

Methot isn't even resigned as of yet beyond next year, Cowen is playing like an AHLer, Wiercioch is looking solid, Borowiecki hasn't stuck long term, and Claeson is 20.  The blueline in Ottawa is already way too young with Phillips, this signing is for Ceci more than anyone because there isn't one playing beside Phillips I would trust in the organization to play next to that kid.

Does trading Phillips for a 2nd rounder make the Sens better?  No.  Does it make the Sens worse?  Yes.  Simple as that.
