Explain to me why we made offers for both Alfredsson and David Clarkson, since you seem to think we only replaced Alfie's salary with Ryan's and didn't want to spend a dime more.

Just like how we were all over getting Rick Nash despite the fact he wouldn't waive his NTC to come here.  It makes great PR to make plays for big name free agents when you know you won't wind up with them in the end.  Can you tell me what kind of offer we put in on Clarkson, because there is absolutely no evidence that we actually made him a big offer.  We apparently offered Alfie around $4M after he asked for around $6M.

Why didn't we make the Ryan trade prior to losing Alfie?  Because we needed to do something after he walked, otherwise the calls for season ticket cancellations would have continued (they fielded a lot of cancellation calls on Friday).  It was easy to bring in his $5M salary when we hadn't already committed $5M to Alfie.

You use 'offers' to both Alfie and Clarkson as evidence of some sort of willingness to spend money.  We didn't sign either guy.

Clarkson did not have a NMC/NTC, he was a UFA, and *he* came to Ottawa of his own desire. While it may be true that he just did that to up Toronto's offer, Murray was negotiating in good faith.

i forget what thread it was but I think Jagr would be very smart actually. Still have a hole on the second line, provides great leadership, excellent work ethic, just a fun guy to be around. Hard to knock off the puck. Would create space for Turris and MacArthur.

Can't afford him.

they'll wait until the deadline to add more, such as a rental, so that they won't have to pay the entire salary

or they will take a player where the other team takes back money

Agreed.  How many previous cup winners have been $14M under the cap?

To be fair, they still have Condra, Cowen and Wiercioch to re-sing, which will come in around $7M (give or take a couple hundred thousand). Then add another $1.5M for injury callups, and $2-3M more for a deadline acquisition or two, so they'll be under the cap by $4-5M, which is is 7-8%. Not huge.

Compare this to the Rangers or Maple Leafs or Phillies of the last decade or so, spending up to (and usually over) the cap while getting nothing in the Cup department. Many other teams in ths same boat, just maybe not as consistent at being bad with their fans' money.

Are we one player away from being a contender? I think we may be one player away (RHS D-man) from challenging for the Conference title. But we still have too many young players who don't (yet, hopefully) know how to play in the later rounds. That may only come with experience.

And we'll see how much Melnyk's cheapness impacts this.

Yes.

Or we won't.

Jagr can play the role of the aging European player with uncontrollable hair. If we decide that position needs to be filled.

OK, for those who are still convinced we have a $50M internal budget, the Sens currently sit at $49.7M cap with 3 players to sign that will add up to close to $7M. And the actual salary is only about $2M behind the cap hit (and eventually the salary will catch up to the cap hit).

Our salary payroll is currently $47.7M (actual salary, not cap hit).

Condra: max $1.25, Wiercioch max $1.5, Cowen max $3.5M. Takes us to about $54M. There's no possible way deadline acquisitons will cost us an EXTRA $2-$3M (that would be like taking on $8M to $12M in full-year salaries, without losing any current roster players). Maybe a $1M increase is more realistic. Still under the cap by close to $10M.

Fact remains, we're a cheap Donkey budget team.

Melnyk loses money if we spend a lot and don't advance far into the playoffs.
This year 3 of their plan, we'll see what the line will be when we're a contender, they can't keep saying rebuild forever.

The Sens might be a cheap budget team but the lineup they have now, if healthy has a fantastic chance at winning the division. IMO it's been money well spent thus far and if the right player comes along and Murray wants him, I bet he finds a way to land him. The Ryan move should make everyone take a second look at their opinion when talking about the team budget. Vancouver is at the top of the spending teams, same with SJ and there is no way I would take their rosters over the Sens.

If this is Melnyk being cheap, we're gonna be fine.

We're built to be a strong team that will need to add money down the line and I have no doubt we will.

Brennan says we signed Joe Corvo.

Yeah who saw that one?

Need a right handed Dman to come in and run unit 2 pp or help run it with Karlsson.

It's a glaring need, so I'm sure Murray has something in mind.
