Sorry but I just can't blame Melnyk for Alfredsson bailing on his team. He wanted "a chance at the Cup".

I'm not overlooking his past. But that's in the past. The present is one in which Alfie is on a division rival, and we need to make his life a living hell when he plays us.

Right. We'll play hard against him. But there's no way he should be booed in our building or anything else like that.

I won't boo but fans absolutely have that right if they want to.

If the Sens play Detroit in the playoffs I hope CTC is like the ACC when Alfie touches the puck.

This city supported him for 17 years, drafted him when teams wrote him off for multiple years of eligibility. Became a multimillionaire because of playing her. I think he owed us honestly and not some shady signing.

He isn't a downgrade either and he's a LH shot.  Call all things equal with the players except the side they shot... way more important to a team like Ottawa with all RH shots up front.  It's a great fit and he has the ability to move up and down the lineup from the 1st to the 3rd.  Just a really solid signing

I'd actually go on record and predict that McArthur will score more goals this coming season than Silfverberg. Umm, better qualify that -- in the NHL.

The city paid Alfredsson $55M dollars. His salary comes from ticket prices (sure, some of that would have been Leafs/Habs fans but mostly this city).

Melnyk paid his own money to buy this team, pays taxes, employs 100s of people, and has *lost* millions over the years. Sure, if/when he sells he'll make a nice profit over what he paid originally, but he would probably have made more of a profit if he invested, say, in real estate.

So, on the one had you have a guy who was picked in the 6th round, 4 years after he was originally eligible (that's literally 1198 players drafted ahead of him), who has benefited to the tune of $55M dollars and near-god status; on the other hand you have a self-made billionnaire who has lost millions keeping hockey in this town.

Hey, I know I'm spinning it hard but those are facts, nevertheless. Don't *ever* say that an athlete doesn't owe anything to the city that made him a star.

I think they need to go into next year capitalizing on this decision by Alfie by making their marketing campaign a "revenge" theme so to speak. Infer that we want to make Alfie regret his choice big time. Diddle the Pesky Sens, Diddle the us against the world, it's time to get down to business.

Absolutely. I echoed that sentiment yesterday, saying it's time for this team to grow up. Mendes wrote an article today with a very similar tone (how this event should galvanize the team).

Your former Captain just said you weren't good enough. Wanna prove him wrong? Wanna prove that, maybe, he had a hand to play in how things went down?

After all, most of the current roster weren't around when they were losing 4 straight playoff series to the Leafs.

I find it funny reading about how Alfie owes us, and all the people that feel betrayed. He took at least one (if not more) hometeam discounts to stay here. He could've left way sooner. Fact of the matter is that Melnyk isn't going to spend with the big boys to put us over the top, at least not yet. Can't blame Alfie for leaving.

The UFA options on D:

http://www.capgeek.com/ufa-finder/?position_id=D

Some interesting RHS options there... Zidlicky, Corvo, Gilbert, Kostka, Blum, White. We just need someone to challenge Gryba for that #4 spot and, if we're lucky, provide a little offense.

#Sens Jared Cowen is an RFA. His contract did not slide in 2010-11 by mutual agreement of NHL & NHLPA. No explanation as to why at present.

One more player to re-sign.  Odd circumstance, there must have been a grievance.

Good. Hamonic is a comparable. 7 years 3.8 sounds good.

Murray's own account seems to point to a lowball initial offer.

I would throw Sanguinetti in there as well. He's much more of a risk than any of those guys, but he'll make less as well, and could still payoff. He does have untapped offensive ability, and could, potentially, do really well in Maclean's system.

Money out:

Gonchar: $5,000,000
Regin - $800,000
Benoit - $900,000
Alfredsson - $1,000,000
Silfverberg - $990,000
Latendresse - $2,000,000
Lundin - $1,150,000

Total = $11,840,000

Money in:

MacArthur = $3,250,000
Ryan = $5,562,500

Total = $8,812,500

Savings = $3,027,500

That savings (and more) can now be used on a veteran RHD
