Because Clarkson is a very good hockey player. Yah, he is going to be over paid but Ottawa at this point can afford to do that. Might also help Spezza take a lower salary along with the captaincy when his contract is up as well. Clarkson you have to look beyond the stats for sure and look at the fact that Toronto wants him as well and playing against that Toronto lineup plus Clarkson, Ottawa would be lacking some muscle for sure.

Clarkson is capable of putting up 20 and 20 while making life hell for the other teams. Might be the perfect player to put on a line with Michalek and Spezza as well if you want any kind of production above 20 goals.

Put Clarkson next to Turris and you don't have to worry about him not being strong enough

Clarkson makes everybody on that team about a foot taller.

HockeyCentral said the Leafs apparently offered Clarkson $5.2M for 7 years.

Ottawa offers better place for him to raise a family, better team, and better centres to play with

Nice cap hit, too long a deal. Ottawa can't lose if he signs here for more money and less term or if Toronto gets him for about 3 - 4 years too many.

They're not allowed to make offers to free agents right now, apparently

Ottawa will offer him 7 years, no reason not to... might have to raise the average salary but 5.5 x 7 for Clarkson... could be worth it if he is the piece that's missing in Ottawa. A lot of players will play a lot bigger if he does play in Ottawa.

I am sure they have been, there's a lot of confusion over how this works apparently.

My concern is his (lack of) production in the post-season. 5 goals in 45 games; Fisher (pro-rated to 45 games) has more than 8. In many ways, this guy is Mike Fisher, but just not as good, but his salary will be higher.

Same can be said of players we already have in the organization -- Noesen, for one.

Have you watch Devils hockey in the playoffs?

Who do you think a kid like Noesen would learn from? Also, Clarkson is a good guy to have in the room flanking Spezza when Alfi retires.

Noesen is nothing like Clarkson. He doesn't fight or have the same edge.

and he is just a prospect

I just don't like the numbers being bandied around.

I know that, but at $5.2M or the $5.5M that Ottawa would have to overpay I want more than just Chris Neil in the playoffs. Neil has 9 goals in 91 playoff games; pro-rate that to Clarkson's 45 games and you get 4.45. Clarkson has 5. And don't give me the crap about the Devils playing a defensive game. The Sens haven't been able to score in the playoffs since 2007. NHL.com is being extra slow so I can't check the team scoring stats but it wouldn't surprised me if the Devils weren't any worse than the Sens over the last 5 years.

I wouldn't mind a player like Clarkson. He could certainly round out our top-six. But his playoff (non) performance, frankly, scares me, especially at that rate and term

Clarkson's last 3 years should be taken into consideration, not his whole past. Last 3 years he has same number of goals as Michalek. He has a Mem Cup and is a playoff guy. Chris Neil in his prime was very valuable in the playoffs.

The thing that I like about Clarkson is he works his tail off. Success didn't come right away, then he dealt with some injuries, but he kept working and it's gonna pay off for him - either here or somewhere else.
