Clarkson makes everybody on that team about a foot taller.

Same can be said of players we already have in the organization -- Noesen, for one.

Noesen is nothing like Clarkson. He doesn't fight or have the same edge.

and he is just a prospect

I know that, but at $5.2M or the $5.5M that Ottawa would have to overpay I want more than just Chris Neil in the playoffs. Neil has 9 goals in 91 playoff games; pro-rate that to Clarkson's 45 games and you get 4.45. Clarkson has 5. And don't give me the crap about the Devils playing a defensive game. The Sens haven't been able to score in the playoffs since 2007. NHL.com is being extra slow so I can't check the team scoring stats but it wouldn't surprised me if the Devils weren't any worse than the Sens over the last 5 years.

I wouldn't mind a player like Clarkson. He could certainly round out our top-six. But his playoff (non) performance, frankly, scares me, especially at that rate and term

Clarkson's last 3 years should be taken into consideration, not his whole past. Last 3 years he has same number of goals as Michalek. He has a Mem Cup and is a playoff guy. Chris Neil in his prime was very valuable in the playoffs.

The thing that I like about Clarkson is he works his tail off. Success didn't come right away, then he dealt with some injuries, but he kept working and it's gonna pay off for him - either here or somewhere else.

Seriously, people are overlooking a lot of what Clarkson has done in his last few years. Not everyone is a star when they are 22, 23 years old. Clarkson has figured out the game at the pro level, he knows what to do and when to do it, and he can score some goals. He will be the guy that is flanking Spezza and Michalek and could very well be a 20 goal guy for 3, 4 years in Ottawa as well. The last 2 or 3 years of that deal might hurt, yah, no question but they are going for it now which is what you want to see from the Sens. They get Clarkson and they are contenders, that's the truth.

Chris Neil in his prime never approached $5.5M. Again, I'm looking at value.

I can't imagine a destination more desirable than playing with Spezza, Alfredsson, Karlsson, Methot, Anderson and especially MacLean.

If you are looking for value then you don't sign any free agents.  Unless you sign guys for league minimum who just want an NHL roster spot you are always going to overpay.

It's a question of whether you can afford to overpay and whether the acquistion gives you the Cup  or a deep playoff run(s).

The value on someone like this can't really be put solely in dollar amounts IMO. He's gonna take some major pressure off guys like Michalek and even Alfie and he's going to help this team be even harder to play against, while at the same time teaching some of the young players what it'll take to be an NHLer - maybe most notable Noesen, who I'm sure aspires to be the same kind of player.

MacLean said this:

AJ Jakubec ‏@AJonSports

Great interview with Paul MacLean on @TEAM1200Ottawa. Says players want to come to Ottawa. "David Clarkson came to us." #Sens

There is pressure to score and, unless something drastically changes, he won't take any major pressure off in that respect.

well first off we should be happy some players want to come here. Ottawa hasn't topped the list of destinations for years now. I think you have to look at this, I've heard both ends about this guy, for sure it's a gamble. I personally don't know if he's really the answer to our top line winger dilemma but for sure he could be solid.

I think the big point here is he won't cost us anything more then money, and that we have lots of space. maybe you can now package a few of those prospects and go after a big RW d-man a la Bogo... maybe Boyle spezz.

He deserves a chance at a cup and he's not getting that with Ottawa ever.

Diddle that.  Come on man, what's your problem?  You don't see this team as having massive potential, guided by a Jack Adams winning coach?  Get real, everyone else does.

That's harsh, he's not saying anything ludicrous. Ottawa won't beat out Boston or whoever for a Cup NEXT year, but they are playoff mainstays. Like I said though grass isn't always greener.

if anyone thinks this team wins a Cup next year then I don't know what they're smoking, but IMO guys only leave seriously Dung teams for a chance at a cup

I think they are roughly 2 players away from once-you're-in-the-playoffs-anything-can-happen status.

No what's YOUR PROBLEM. Sorry I don't have sycophantic leanings like the rest of you. I'm just saying what *I* would do if I was Alfie with one or two years left in the tank.

There is no guarantee the team he picks wins the Cup.. see Iginla. Rumours are he is deciding between Ott, Bos & Det.

Are Bos & Det favoured to win a Cup over Pitts or Chic. If he wants to win the Cup Pitts or Chi should be where he goes.

Murray said in an interview today on the McLean signing -- that he is surprised by the angst in Ottawa about the lack of progress in signing Alfie. He said it will get done.. he assumes. Said they haven't talked salary yet. -- Which I find is strange. I saw that in a Citizen article.. but it now appears to be gone.

Also re: Clarkson. I don't know how he can spend an entire day in Ottawa and none of the Ottawa media knew that until after the fact. He is also very good friends with Spezza.

At least Boston seems serious about doing something. (See Seguin deal)

What has Bry and Euge done again?

Again, not saying this is what I want to happen, but if I'm Alfie, I'm headed to Boston with Chara, Kelly and Daug.

They were saying on the radio this morning.. the Bruins have concern over Seguin's hip injuries. Also they didn't like his lack of compete in the playoffs...

There is no guarantee Boston wins the Cup... none at all. They almost lost in the 1st round... save a collapse by the Leafs... I loved that BTW.
