I think something important to remember for us is that we made the second round of the playoffs despite dealing with an unprecedented slew of injuries all season. If we have the same lineup as last year and are more healthy (specifically, Spezza and Karlsson), then there's no reason to think this team isn't capable of a deep playoff push. The young guys will be better and are goaltending will still be excellent. Maybe it'll be the trade deadline before we make a significant addition.

We'll see, again, not convinced the teams needs to change all that much but if they go into the season with the same lineup for the most part they are banking on having 6 or more 20 goal guys, which is very possible. Think they are banking on one of Stone, Noesen, or Peumpel really stepping up as well. Maybe even Lazar if he has a great camp.

Spezza and Karlsson were in the lineup when we lost in the 2nd round. Of course we all suspect that they will be at a different level next April/May than they were this year, but the point remains -- we were mostly a full, healthy team against the Penguins. Problem is that we did not have the playoff scorers -- the ones who were willing to lose teeth to score, like in the 1st round. I don't know how many such players we have in the system -- Alfie, Pageau, and then who? Neil, sure, but he doesn't have the skill. Maybe Greening, with a similar skill issue. Noesen may have it, but is he ready to step up as a rookie? We need someone like Briere, but apparently we are not on his short list of three.

We should improve on last year -- finish 5-6 or perhaps even get that 1st round home ice advantage, but still end up with a 2nd round exit.

You're kidding right? Karlsson and Cowen were nowhere near 100% and their conditioning wasn't enough since they missed most of the season.

Same goes for Spezza, I think he said he had some discomfort. Michalek had his knee acting up as well, you can't say he was anywhere near 100%, he wasn't all season.

Ultimately the team was too inexperienced and too in awe of the Penguins to assert themselves much. Pittsburgh got the opportunities and they capitalized most of the time. Montreal was different, they tried to push us around and we kicked their Donkey, even then the Habs outplayed the team for large stretches, they just could not finish and Anderson was outstanding. When Montreal ran out of gas by the 3rd period we took over and took advantage of a very shake Price.

Spezza wasn't even close to 100% and anything he did (or didn't do) in the playoffs should not be held against him, not this time anyways.

I couldn't second this more. Sens fans are gonna freak out on Friday if the Sens do nothing - which I'd say is a 60/40 in favour of.

When this team was knocked out vs the Pens, I started making mental lists of scorers who would look good on this team and how we could get them, but the more I think about it, the more this roster just needs to mature. Yes, if a superstar, goal-scoring player becomes available, we should go after him if his character is a right fit, but otherwise, this roster should be very, very competitive.

I'd echo right now that if Spezza, Michalek (haha), Cowen, Karlsson et. al can come back healthy, we're a damn good team and we should score a lot more than we did at points last year. We still need to figure out what to do with Gonchar's spot that is left unfilled, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if Gryba took that spot and Wiercioch and Phillips took turns on the right side on pairing 3 - and Wiercioch became the man on PP1 with Karlsson.

Fans always judge a team by the amount/quality of moves in the offseason.  Even the media gives "free agency report cards" and they've given us low grades(lol) in the past.

I absolutely hate Free Agency day, way too much money and term given out to mostly 2nd line players who are getting paid mostly for their past accomplishments.  I'd say at least half of these contracts will be dumped or bought out by their teams in the future.

If the Sens are to win a Cup, most of the core players (and thus most of the cap) should be taken up players that we have drafted and developed.  If we are lucky we can add a Hossa (like Chicago did) to put us over the top.  Anyone who tries to build a winner through free agency is an idiot.

Murray is doing the right things, shrewd moves like getting Turris and Methot is how we've made big strides the last 2 seasons and these were not really blockbuster moves.

He needs to pull off another move like that if possible.

I could see another trade like the Methot one. Z.Smith + something for a solid top 4 D-man who can play on the right side.

It would have to be a trade because then he can move salary out as well as in.

I imagine teams will make more trades once they strike out on free agents.

James Mirtle is saying most teams are trying to clear cap room and dump salary so we're not a candidate for taking on money if the budget is that strict. You don't want other teams' garbage either.

Not garbage, no chance of that. We'll have the pick of the litter when it comes to high priced talent that needs to be shed, hopefully someone awesome falls our way.

Murray will grab a guy who will not ask for much. We discussed guys like Russel and Blum who will play for low money on a short term deal but they could blossom and be a nice fit here. Gilbert might be an option as well.

The best FA signings are the underrated players who are largely passed over in favor of the big names. If Murray's scouts are on the ball we can grab someone good who just wants a roster spot and might be a great fit in MacLean's system.

I will get ripped for this for sure but it would be so entertaining to me to have Alfredsson on the Bruins or Wings. Those games would be ridiculous facing Alfie. IF he does leave I lose all respect for him I ever had.

Doesn't sound like he is giving us much.

Daniel Alfredsson will give the Senators the first shot at signing him but he's certainly thrown a loop into negotiations.

The Senators captain told the Gothenburg Times _ a newspaper in his hometown _ Thursday that his No. 1 priority is negotiate a new contract with Ottawa.

Asked where he wished to play, Alfredsson gave an answer that will send shivers down the spines of Ottawa fans:

"I don’t wish anything. The only thing I’ve decided is that I want to play for another year. At least.”
To call Alfredsson tight-lipped would be an understatement.

“First, we will negotiate with Ottawa and then we will see what happens,” said Alfredsson.
While the Boston Bruins have confirmed they’ve spoken with Alfredsson’s agent J.P. Barry, it’s believed the San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings might be among a group of “multiple” teams that have called his camp.

If Alfredsson does test the market Friday when free agency opens at noon it will be the first time in his career with the Senators he’s done that. Teams have a two-day window to speak to free agents.

Alfredsson, who is expected to make a decision, said he isn’t sure if he will test the free agent market.

“I don’t know, nothing’s decided yet,” said Alfredsson.
Alfredsson certainly didn’t sound like somebody who has ruled out moving on if the opportunity presents itself.

“I haven’t spoken to my agent (Thursday), but we assume that several clubs will call and show interest,” said Alfredsson.

well you know i'm in the camp that says this team needs to build its own leadership group and move on from Alfie...we need to create a new identity, one that creates multiple cup runs
