I am not complaining about the budget, just concerned about the ability to spend more down the road.

The floor will be going up and it will cost more just to keep what we have.

Exactly...

Melnyk probably lost a bundle in his divorce.. that put him in a bad way financially?

There was an unsubstantiated rumour on another site (probably not true) that the league had to step in and pay some of the players salaries at the end of the season -- they kept that hush-hush.

They need a new Zamboni, apparently, and don't have the $$ to do that..

All of this really has me concerned that this team could be sold and it is gone out of town..

The NHL saved a team in freakin Phoenix and has Dung in Florida and elsewhere. They would save Ottawa without a doubt.

Not gonna happen Sandy. The NHL would force Melnyk to sell the team and the owners would literally never be able to move it out of the nation's capital.

We were ready to get Rick Nash last year and somehow all I read online is Melnyk won't pay this, Melnyk won't pay that.
Enough of this Dung.

Laugh1 Yeah, that elevated quickly to Melnyk having to sell the team.

ya i'm pretty sure melnyk made money by we going to the 2nd round AND being a bottom cap team. he'll fork the money when it's needed.

People always find something to complain about eh? My God is Sandy Chicken Little or just a panic in general? Sens fans are so annoying so often it's hard to take.

We've been operating with the understanding that Melnyk will spend money when we're making a run. Last season was not the time to do this, especially when the injuries piled up.

I think he'll be willing to pay if Murray can land a legit superstar, but he really doesn't want to overpay in the free agent market to land mediocre players.

Time will tell.

That's quite the generalization.

Although I disagree with sandy's concern. I can see why ottawa fans can become concerned.

See the instability of the following:

- Renegades
- Rough Riders
- Fat Cats
- Lynx
- Senators in the first 10 years

Pretty much any franchise besides the 67s.

Can we end this talk about Melnyks finances and discuss players we think the Sens should go after. The sens have a great opportunity here to alliviate cap concerns for a team or two.

Ill start with the expectation Neely with disagree with all of them. Some or UFAs some aren't. I'm basically looking at players that I wouldn't expect would cost a player who was on the roster last year.

- Dan Boyle
- David Clarkson
- Patrick Elias
- Dan Brier
- Grant Clotsome
- Andrew Ference

Who'd I miss?

Tampa's trying to trade Ryan Malone. Not that I consider him a solution to our goal-scoring problem, but I wonder if the Sens talk to Yzerman at all about him? His cap hit is $4.5M, but he's only getting paid $2.5M for the next two seasons. This last season was a write-off for him as he was riddled with injuries, but before that he's been decent. I know we were rumoured to have interest back when he was with the Pens.

Anyway, I don't see it happening, but he's a guy that comes cheap salary-wise and trade wise.

A guy that is basically done... Cheechoo-esque done. Could score 10-15 buy there are a lot of guys in Ottawa who can do that who make less than 2.5 not to mention the 4 plus mil cap hit (not that it's important).

In 11/12, Malone scored 20 and had 48 pts in 68 games..but yeah, the point is there - he wouldn't be a great fit for the Sens at this point in time. Maybe he's a part of a larger deal and is a cap-dump by T-Bay.

No idea what Tampa could package with Malone for a team to take him... either way he won't be coming to Ottawa. I still think Briere is the target for the most part.

I've said before I don't think Boyle is available, and I stand by that. Elias is intriguing, as he is a guy that has been incredibly consistent. He's up there in age (37), but still probably has at least a couple years left in him. He can play LW or C too apparently. It's hard to picture him anywhere but New Jersey, but allegedly NJ is having some money issues, and may not be able to afford him or Clarkson. Speaking of Clarkson, he'll get $5M+ for 7 years from some other team, not here.

Briere I think we all agree is a logical signing. Clitsome and Ference both play the wrong side (LD), and likely will command more $$$ than we want to pay...though I do like both players.

- Dan Boyle (great player)
- David Clarkson (will be so over paid he will be bought out eventually)
- Patrick Elias (I suppose... nothing wrong with him for a year or two)
- Dan Brier (he could be a Sen, no question)
- Grant Clotsome (good depth D man if need be)
- Andrew Ference (no chance)

Who'd I miss?

There.

So Brier is the most likely fit. Unless the Sens would over pay. Which wouldn't be worth it. I'd love the sens to land Elias. Would be a huge step forward for the team.

Having said that I feel like their most pressing need is a experienced defencemen. But not ference he's going to get a big pay day.

Now that Vinny is being bought out... might be a guy I would try on the wing in Ottawa for sure. That's a player who is a decent risk but at what cost?
