Dallas has reached a deal with Gonchar -- $10M over 2 years. Paperwork to be signed and then that's that.

But a conditional 6th rounder is too little even for his rights. The risk of trading his rights without getting a sure return is stupid.

how is that too little? They would have got nothing at all if he walked. It's basically just a favour to Dallas.

It's a great move because at this point they are going to be drafting depth and they now have an extra pick to either move or draft a guy with an outside shot at playing in the NHL. They got something for basically nothing.

I get it, what I'm saying is that it's been reported that the 6th rounder would only come our way if gonchar signed with them. I'm nitpicking right now but I wish there was a guarantee that we'd get a pick no matter what. Mootpoint now since gonchar just signed his deal with dallas

Not sure why we didn't just pay Gonchar, but again have to trust Murray

Yeah $5M is too much. Good for gonchar though and he got 2 years. Surprised that it was dallas his agent chose in the end

Yeah, $10M for a 40 year old who plays soft and has lost a step he never really had. I realize speed was never part of his game, but in today's NHL it's becoming more and more important, especially if you don't play hard. He saved our bacon in March, sure, and we're all grateful for that, but he was brought here to mentor Karlsson and he has done a wonderful job at that (Norris, after all), but now the pupil has become the master. Also, we need a rightie.

Our D next year lines up like this:

Methot - Karlsson
Cowen - ???
Phillips - Gryba

Wiercioch, Borowiecki

I am making an assumption here that Benoit is moving on. Is anyone else down in Bingo close to being ready? Wideman, Claeson? Wideman is a rightie but he is small.

Coming up we also have Ceci and Rutkowski -- both righties. Ceci is projected to have a higher ceiling, but I wonder if Rutkowski makes Ceci even more useful to the Sens as trade-bait? Rutkowski was close to a PPG with the Winterhawks, and then put up 14 points in 21 post-season games. And he plays a much more physical game as evidenced by his PIMs.

Although Ceci is an Ottawa kid (and we all know how the organization loves those), maybe he could land us an experienced 2nd pairing rightie who will stay here long enough for Rutkowski to come up to speed (3-4 years).

It is not smart to pay a 39-40 year old that type of money, except if you're a young team on the backend like Dallas who needs the veteran presence

He was worth his contract in Ottawa for most of it, but he;s not worth that anymore. I'd rather have Clitsome at cheap dollars

This guy Rutkowski is so far back on the depth chart.not even worth it to even consider him having an NHL future at this point.

Captain of the top team in the WHL, second highest scoring defenseman in the league, outscoring his teammate Seth Jones. He hasn't had an easy road to get here but has proven he has the character and determination.

And, yeah, he's a rightie. Don't sell him short.

At the end of the day he is still just an over-age free agent signing.
