Matt Read has torn ribcage muscles. I thought he was out for a fairly long time. Schenn is a rookie, not a proven top-six player. Point taken, though, they have enough to trade one and hardly skip a beat. But with Bryzgalov's salary/term and the way he's actually playing, they don't need a goalie (i.e. Bishop) and we're not exactly overflowing with NHL defensemen (can't make that trade with just rookies).

We could totally get Simmonds for a package involving Cowen but we won't do it.
Methot - Karlsson - Wiercioch and Gryba would be a fine top 4 going forward.
Not saying I want Simmonds over Cowen but the fact is it's a feasible trade.

Toooo funny, I said that to someone yesterday that I would do a Cowen for Simmonds swap as well. Wouldn't even think twice to be honest. Love Wayne Simmonds.

You kidding me? Wayne Simmonds might be the most underrated player in the NHL. I like Cowen but Simmonds is the type of player you with, but so is Cowen. In Ottawa case I would make that trade just because of the depth on the left side of the blueline.

Cowen is their best defenseman, arguably. Not trading him for anything at this point. Not a knock on Simmonds. Simmonds is ok, he's just on a streak right now.

Now...? He scored 28 goals last year as a 2nd line player... it's not a streak, he's a 25 goal guy that does absolutely everything. Fantastic hockey player and a guy that can help any team in the world win. One of my favorites in the NHL, plays the game right.

Love Cowen too but I could see him moved in the right deal, if it ever came along. Wouldn't give him up for anything other than a long term player that's goign to contribute on the top 2 lines now and for the next 5-10 years.

You're seeing right now why Ottawa should not even think about moving Cowen or any d-man. They are getting peppered every night.

but that's also because Spezza and Karlsson are out and the offense doesn't sustain any pressure/doesn't stay long in the oz

Cowen and Simmonds would have a very simmilar value right now IMO. You do that deal today, it's a wash.
Only problem is, Cowen will get better every year until his late 20's IMO, and by year 2-3 of this deal it will be a steal for the Flyers.

I'm not disputing Cowen is a big piece in Ottawa's future... but Simmonds is very much a player Ottawa is missing. Is Cowen a player that Ottawa is missing or have they found that player in Methot? I'm not saying this is as easy as yes or no but if tomorrow we woke up and Simmonds was a Sen and Cowen was a Flyer, I would be pretty happy.

I also agree with your take on not being able to sustain pressure in the offensive zone... when you don't have the puck you are on defense. Cowen wouldn't help with that right now.

Benoit told to get a home in Ottawa... hope he signs a 1 way deal soon and becomes Ottawa's #6, 7 D man going forward for a year or two. Always love these stories.

Or Cowen could be injury prone, too. He missed a year (and wasn't back 100% for longer than that) because of his knee, then another year because of his hip. He played all 82 games last year but we don't know if that was a fluke, or if this year was.

You never know.

He'll be a decent utility guy for the next few years. It's Lundin I don't really care for.

Considering how little Lundin has played due to injuries I don't think it's fair to call him out on anything. He's been solid most of his career from what I've read. Maybe he's a bad fit, maybe he hasn't had time to settle in due to how little he's player.

I do want him back, the amount of rookies (and rookie mistakes) on our blueline is scary.

It's pretty amazing. The Sens are 5-3-2 in their last 10, goof for 12 points. Of the 8 teams out of a playoff spot (let's face it -- that's our competition right now) only two have matched the 12 points: Rangers (with an identical 5-3-2) and Capitals (6-4). Additionally, both the Leafs and the Flyers (two of the three playoff-bound teams below us) are 6-4-0, meaning they haven't gained a point in the standings. And New Jersey are unraveling, going 3-5-2 and actually dropping 4 points further behind us.

Gotta love those loser points. Michalek should be ready pretty soon, and Stone has now played two games since his injury. I think it's pretty amazing that I didn't even have to mention Anderson.

Still sucks losing 3 in a row but, hey, we're still in 5th and getting some welcomed relief soon.

He's okay, but the point is he's nothing that we need IMO. I'd still rather Boroweicki.
