You may be right about Nash, and certainly people do question him, but it is painfully clear that OTT needs to add a top-line winger -- someone who can, not replace (because that can't be done), but help to fill the void Alfie's retirement will create. This team is in desperate need of adding top-line talent, not 3-4 years from now, but yesterday, now. It needs to get done ASAP. If Alfie retires this year or next, and we can't get a legitimate top-liner, we will have one of the sorriest top 6s in the league, with three legitimate top end guys (Spezza, Michalek, and Turris, who is a bit of a stretch at this point), and then a bunch of rookies and tweeners. For me, BM has to make sure that that nightmare situation doesn't come about.

Yes replacing Alfie is the only reason I am not flat out against this but Howson is really pushing it with his demands.

Even with our sorry top-6, we were still tops in league scoring last year.

If Melnyk isn't against this it's probably because he thinks Nash will help sell (season) tickets.

You may be right there, too. I certainly would not be willing to do much more than Zbad + Bishop + Foligno. Zbad + Lehner + 1st rounder to me is out if the question.

If they acquired Bobrovsky I think Lehner and Bishop aren't wanted anymore. They probably want Stone, Cowen, Silfverberg etc.

I don't see it that way. I see the Bobrovsky trade as clearing the way to ship out Mason, and to bring in a young goalie like Bishop/Lehner/Bernier/Schnieder, etc. -- with Bob being the #1B choice for the year, but the young goalie being the team's goalie of the future. I totally think Mason is done in CLB -- too many years of stumbling for him have shattered the team's / organization's / fan base's faith in that guy. Just a guess on my part, tho', admittedly.

If Ottawa takes Mason back, that drops the asking price significantly. At least the Sens haven't been burned by Columbus before (Leclaire, Filatov) BertFacepalm

I think that's, frankly, a good thing for OTT. Bring the ridiculous asking price for Nash down a bit by agreeing to bit the bullet for one year on Mason. If you can make something like

Nash + Mason
for
Foligno + Bishop + Zibanejad + Wiercioch

work, then do it. One year of pain in the form of Mason -- who, who knows, may well thrive in a backup role, and on a team that isn't really depending on him -- strikes me as more than worth it if it means we finally get that guy who can help us to begin to recover from losing Alfie.

Mason's salary is $3.2m next season.

The positive: A buyout of the deal costs just over 1 million the cap hit is 233k this season and 533k the next.

Paying 1 million to get Nash at a reduced cost makes sense to me.

RDS via Team1200 twitter as of now. "In Melnyk's hands."

If he says "yes" to this trade, the Marshy's episode will be forgotten, AFAIC.

"get it done melnick."

RDS is saying the hold up is budgetary (Melnyk)

So Murray spent all this time trying to get Nash without even getting the owner's approval ???? I find that hard to believe.

Seems it's all about that RDS tweet about it being "budgetary" now - ie: in Melnyk's hands. I think they are reading into that one too much...

Someone get this note to Melnyk quick:

Any money we lose on this deal up front, we quickly gain back in season ticket sales and jersey sales that news of Nash coming to OTT will earn. Spend money to make more money.

Melynk's probably drunk at the hotel bar or something. Will be easy to get a yes out of him.

Not exactly. The problem with RDS is that sometimes stuff from their message board http://legrandclub.rds.ca/communaute/accueil gets confused by some people who can't figure out it's a message board.
