Let's not kid ourselves, it's Karlsson then there's the rest and Cowen is nothing more than part of "the rest" right now.

Time for it to become full time now IMO. Cowen's a beast.

He's not ready, keep him with Gonch next year and watch him flourish.

Also, stay away from Nash.

He's close to being ready, he'll make some mistakes on the top pairing, but I firmly believe it's time. I also think it's time for powerplay time for him as well.

I'll admit that having him on the 2nd pairing won't hurt him though, but I think in a pinch he can play the top pairing and play it well.

I think there should be a different thread for that because it would be far cheaper to get Nash if you're Brian Jurke. I think the cost would be the rights to UFA Jeff Finger and a signed Wendel Clark sweater (replica).

I think Borowiecki-Carkner are more than fine as a bottom pairing. You don't expect -- or need -- future HoFers down there. I'm a bit concerned with Cowen-Karlsson as the top pairing, but mainly because those two have not player together yet. That said, at the first signs of trouble you swap Cowen for Phillips and bob's your uncle. I'd trust Phillips on the top pairing if the Human Flash is out there with him. That would also leave Cowen-Gonchar unchanged from last year.

Sure, there are some issues here but far from what I would call "terrible shape".

We haven't even signed Carkner though. So we have these gaping holes all over the defence. I agree, Boroweicki and Jurcina would be a decent 3rd pairing with Carkner as the 7th D-man, but I do find it a little nerve wracking to think that we're losing Kuba and not replacing him - or replacing him with Phillips is more accurate. A good veteran, but is he as effective as Kuba was given Kuba's minutes on the 2nd pairing? And who plays in Kuba's spot on the PP? Etc. etc..

Carkner, with a full training camp, is a very solid bottom pairing guy. Don't want Jurcina.

As for replacing Kuba on the PP, didn't you know that Phillips led the team in PP goals? And I would definitely try a forward at one of the points as a regular, for sure. Not sure who, Silfverberg, Turris, Alfie?

I think we are better of on D than you (or Hoags) think. Don't forget that at the start of the year we had no Carkner, we *did* have Rundblad and Anderson was playing with a stye in his eye for 3 months.

Yep. Pre-season, pretty much, would do it. And like I said, Phillips will slide in when they struggle.

Yeah, any updates on that? Any Habs trade rumors?

Not convinced. Don't want Phillips on the PP - maybe a forward, but I've said for a while I think the key to us making the playoffs will be our power play - which sucked last year in all honesty. If we go back next season with the same makeup - but without Kuba on the point - where does that leave us? Potentially in the bottom third of the league in percentages - and a possible playoff miss because of it.

Adding someone like The Nasher would probably help. One wonders, though... "What does it take to get Nash?"

Nash already penciled into the line up in the big smoke.

Our PP was ranked #11 in the regular season, I don't see how that 'sucks'. PK was 20th, it's our defense that's awful. Too many brain farts and old, slow defenders trending downwards with no succession plan in place right now and only Borowiecki looking like an NHL D-man from our prospect pool.

You're probably right. Perhaps Andrew Brunette will have to do?

That's pretty impressive, I'm surprised they got that up to 11, I thought they were around 16. So let's say we need to continue to trend of being 11 or higher to make the playoffs, with Kuba not coming back and no replacement set up yet, what are we doing here?

Time for young "Philly" to step up and post some numbers. It's about time that he gets his shot.

Getting Nash would fix all that. Puck possession my boy.

Know what this site needs? A simulation league. Thoughts?
