So at the same time, you don't want to mortgage the future, and you don't want to NOT improve your team if they have a shot at contending. Catch 22.

Well we can't be mortgaging the future, we can't go back to the Muckler days when we had nothing in Bingo.

Turris trade was a good move, we caused a smaller hole in our depth at defence by moving Rundblad but we filled a much bigger hole at #2C. The overall team is much better, especially seeing how Turris is playing and he's only getting better.

A lot of that was poor drafting too. There's a huge difference between "mortgaging the future" and trading away an asset or two.

Well it depends on what you trade for and what you give up. I like the idea of having good prospects that could make the team every year.

This team is successful because it is a "team", everyone gets along, everyone has a role and no bad apples in the room.

Disrupting that might cause more harm than good.

Boo Boo writes about Ruutu:

The Leafs would certainly have an interest in Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu. The Hurricanes have held talks with his camp, but it’s believed Ruutu wants too much on a long-term deal, which means he’ll likely be moved.

That's not good if true.

Yeah, the sentiment seems to be shifting to "it'll be too expensive to get a worthwhile player."

If we stand pat, then Murray can just go with the excuse "We believe in our current group of players!!!"

We already made a big splash with Turris, there's won't be another this season.

Like I said before, if they can resign Ruutu for 3 years after this, you go out and get him.

He probably wants 5 years at close to 5 million per - which is pretty doable from our end for a 20 goal guy with grit. Maybe you get him down to 4.25 or so, hard to say.

No thanks. We need money for signing/resigning our own guys, plus opening the vault for Parise.

Also, why does Buffet bother writing any trade talks? 2 firsts for Gleason, Spacek or Allen? Sure...

You can still do Parise...Ruutu is young enough to be considered part of our core as a 2nd liner.

Perhaps. If you look out 3 years, that's when guys like Petersson, Z-Bad, Silf, Turris, Cowen, Lehner, etc etc will be looking for NEW contracts. Depending on how these guys perform, those could be big contracts too. If Ruutu's under a 5 year contract, that's too long, methinks.

Edit: And don't forget we have Karlsson's contract pending.

The Spez will be taking a paycut by then. No problemo.

Only if he continues to pad his stats in meaningless games.

If?

I stand by my original comment.

Makes perfect sense. Lots of sellers, very few buyers. Rutherford can pretty much dictate his price.

Those current prices are expensive and they'll come down by the deadline but I'm sure he'll get a lot more than people expect.

In all seriousness Buffet is as good at finding out legitimate trade rumours as guys like Dreger and he's better than Kypreos. Obviously, he's morbidly obese so yeah.
