The three primary things I keep thinking/wondering

1.Da Costa is really good at keeping the puck in control and making plays

2.Jared Cowen is a hell of a player

3.Why did Columbus give up Filatov for a 3rd round pick?

Isn't 3 fairly obvious?...

It always was to me, but now I question it even more.

maybe there was a total attitude adjustment from filatov. he doesn't seem to be the same guy. maybe they butted heads in columbus and that relationship took a downside..

man cowen is amazing to watch. I don't bieve he guy will only be strictly counted on for his defencive play. the way he positions himself when in the offensive zone you can tell he's ready to let them rip thowards the net.

So I guess Chris Neil still = WIN?

More importantaly, did they play Cowen with Gonchar? Good looking?

I believe it was Gonchar...funny, I can't really remember. Cowen's Cussing A no matter what. That extra year in junior helped him soooooooooo much.

Looks like to me he'll start the year on PP unit #2, which is a pretty good sign.

Gotta say, things are looking up in Ottawa even if there are going to be some speed bumps along the way.

Da Costa looks like an NHL player but I don't think he will be starting the year up in Ottawa. Give him some time to get some games and some confidence before he makes the jump. He's obviously the first call up.

That leads me to Zibanejad, he looks NHL ready but he's been outplayed IMO by Da Costa. If that's the case, you gotta send him back to The SEL. Can't have anything handed to the kid at this point. 18 years old, tons of time, do the right thing for everyone.

Cowen. Calder winner.

Rundblad, better, much better, not good enough. Like Da Costa, just get some confidence, learn the game a little, come back up. 1st call up on the blueline.

Regin. Hopefully he keeps it up and brings it into the regular season.

Filatov... well, ummm, how did Ottawa get him for a 3rd? I get why COlumbus gave up on him but I don't get the 3rd. If he can be a guy that thinks "shoot" a little more often, I think he can really have that breakout year. Amazing vision with the puck though.

All of this.

With Z-Bad, he looks like he's acclimatizing himself by the game though. I was on board with him going back to the SEL - still am really, but he's proven that he can handle this level. The only issue might be if you send Da Costa down to the AHL and keep Z-Bad up, it doesn't send the greatest message.

Nice problem to have though.

It doesn't send the greatest message if you give Zib the 2nd line center spot. That's because he hasn't in any way shown he's a better option than the two he's competing against. But if they keep him on the wing, the message is isolated on "we think he can play in this league and will develop better by staying here."

Yeah, the wing might be the way to go. Depending on who's spot he takes though I guess...not Greening, Condra, Filatov, Foligno, Neil, Alfredsson, Michalek, Butler...so, I;m not sure where he fits.

Maybe they also feel Regin is better suited to play the wing as well. Depends how MacLean see's this team but one thing is for sure, there is no lack of competition anywhere up and down the lineup.

Strictly IMO:

I think MacLean legitimately sees Regin as the Val Filppula of the Sens. Good with puck management and can play either a top 6 role, or a 3rd line C role without seeming out of place. That's why I think Regin got really lucky that MacLean was hired, perfect for him to become an NHL regular and make an impact.

As for Regin being a winger, I present to you the same issue as if Z-Bad was a wing:

Alfredsson, Michalek, Butler, Foligno, Neil, Condra, Greening, Filatov. That's 8 wingers, so unless you're sitting one of them (and we shouldn't be), then there's no room for another winger at this time.

Filppula has amazing vision. Regin does not.

Theory disproven Sarcasm

Also, Greening has been Dung.

Amazing vision? That's interesting that you would see it that way. I try to watch the RW as much as I can and he's got mad puck possession skills - and sometimes makes great passes, but I'm not 100% on amazing vision.

Also, what are you expecting from Greening? I loved his game when he was killing penalties with Michalek. Speed to burn, voracious forecheck....I dunno man, I think we disagree on these points lol

EDIT: I'm not saying he'll be as good as Filppula, but I think MacLean will use him in the same way he was used in Detroit, perhaps that clears it up a bit?

Okay, he doesn't have world class vision, but as you said, he does make some incredible passes. I've never seen Regin make any remarkable pass whatsoever.

I think Greening has looked pretty much irrelevant. I wasn't impressed at all. I can't really explain it right now, but he just doesn't seem like the same player.

Greening has looked fine IMO, once people get their defined roles and the roster is set, I think you will see players become more comfortable and their games will come around, Butler included.
