And Doughty still needs a contract... find it very odd that they didn't make that a priority before acquiring Mike Richards and signing Simon Gagne. But if they need to make room, Ottawa will take Anze Kopitar in lieu of cap space.

The Avs are also really really incompetent.

Has a team ever won the cup and then had the 1st overall pick? It's a real possibility this up coming season.

Like I was saying earlier, Penner isn't held in very high regard there, not a lot of teams right now can take that cap hit, and The Sens need a winger with some size right now. Makes so much sense on a lot of levels, only question is what Murray thinks about Penner as a player at this point.

They have been for a while.

Nah I think Colorado gets a 10ish pick. Just my hunch, I like their roster a bit.

Varlamov has to be unconscience for them to keep out of the basement of that division. Yah, they have a ton on young talent but they have absolutely no leader, no proven goaltender, and their defense is probably the worst in The NHL. Love their prospects, hate their team.

Fact of the matter is that trade is one of the worst in the last 5 years because everything about it is completly unknown to Colorado, Washington knew exactly what they were getting rid of and what they already have. No idea what they are thinking over there. There is just no way Vokoun wouldn't have accepted 3 years at 15 mil, give or take. Yah, playing for a Stanley Cup is special but I would place the value of it at 10 million dollars or more.

Trade coming out of Washington momentarily IMO, they have 500K to pay Brouwer and Alzner. http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=30

So they need to sign Brouwer - which should be 2+ million, then Alzner, who could potentially be had for 1 year 1.5-2. So they need to clear 4 million minus the 3 or even 4 roster spots they can clear by waiving or sending to the minors.

Candidates for trade or demotion:

Semin (6 million) trade - doesn't really fit anymore IMO
Fehr (2 million) trade - big guy though, but makes a lot of coin
Johansson (0.9) demotion - might get squeezed if the need to clear
King 637K
Beagle 512K - either of these guys only open up a tiny amount of the ~4 million needed

But possibly the biggest issue is they have 6 NHL D-men under 1 way contracts and they need to make room for Carlson and Alzner - now.

Wideman (3.97)
Poti (2.875)
Green (5.25)
Schultz (2.75)
Erskine (1.5)
Hamrlik (3.5) Why the hell did they do that?
Carlson 0.9

Prime candidates for trade: Poti, Erskine.

It doesn't make any sense at all to me. I really don't get it.

Poti will probably go on LTIR, so thee's 2.875 off the books

Why does room need to be made for Carlson? He's been playing for a while now.

I could see the Sens looking at Fehr from Washington if they decide to move him.

I didn't know he was hurt, that changes everything.

I meant more from a contract standpoint, make room for Calrson by moving a contract, but I didn't realize Poti was hurt.

Yah, I don't get why Colorado did that for Varlamov... he's basically Leclaire without the one all-star season behind him, plus he's a flight risk.

As for the player Washington should deal, Semin without a doubt. If they dump that guy for anything near what they got for Varlamov, they should do it and run. They have enough talent without him to make a serious run at the cup.

The only player The Sens should be looking to trade for is a top 6 forward and I really believe Penner will be the guy they go after if they do indeed make a move, which is probably about 50/50, but LA does have to make a move.

I'm f-ing shocked that deal happened...man....his agent Cussed up bad I think and by the time it all came about, TB had their guy, Florida already signed someone Facepalm , Colorado was being challenged....Damn, really messed up that the SAME goalie as Bryzgalov just got signed for 1.5 million.

Flyers fans must be hysterical right now.

Did Sherman just get destroyed by another GM over goalies? Laugh1 First, this Dung for brains trades Craig Anderson for Brian Elliott...then he trades a 1st round pick in the heart of a retooling + a 2nd round pick that will be high no matter what, for Varlamov - a guy who's definitely good, but nowhere near as good as Vokoun.

McPhee kills 2 birds there, he eliminates one destination for Vokoun to go to and he FLEECES Colorado.

Don't want Penner. He is only dominant in the Silicon Valley Men's Softball League or whatever Dean Lombardi said before Laugh1

Meh, I'm more of a fan of Penner's than I am of Lombardi. Penner didn't play well in LA, granted, but he was also an awful fit. Some guys can't come into a room with 20 games left and find a comfort level. It took him a year to find it in Edmonton too. Give Penner a center like Spezza and a clear role on the team, I think he's a solid player. I have always liked Penner.

I'll take Penner. Might be a good fit coming to a team where he'd be a vet... I'm sure he'll produce on a line with Spezza... most do. See Bulter and Regin
