Obviously there will be some convo between the Murray brothers and as a result B.Murray may not pull a trigger on a deal for Penner, but he is still the same GM who signed him to his first NHL contract and still the same GM that had a trade for him worked out.
There are a couple of guys at a crossroads in Ottawa right now, Filatov and Regin, you can afford to take a chance during a rebuild, you have to see who has it and who doesn't. He's also in a contract year. He was great with Edmonton for most of his time.
I guess it comes down to how MacLean and staff feel about it. You certainly don't want a player who's mailing it in, MacLean will kill him I'm sure. If MacLean thinks he can work with him, then I bet you can STEAL him from LA, like for a 3rd round pick. The reasoning is: they might just want to free up the $$ and go for a cheap vet or wait for the trade deadline.
The attractive part(s) of Penner is that he's bloody massive, will hit 20 goals, is in the final year of his contract, so he's an asset at the trade deadline, has a history with Murray.
The negative are: he's lazy, not fast (although not as slow as I initially thought), not very skilled and overpaid (disregarding yesterday).
Penner is good for 20 goals every year basically and he is in his prime. Put him on Spezza's wing and he's laughing to 25 or 30 for sure. He has his falls backs but the team is not center around him, there are guys that can move up and down the lineup if he does struggle, and you can cut bait with him at years end if need be. Contract year is a huge bonus with him because there is obvious motivation.
