I'll stick with this. I think Regin can have a bounce back year, particularly with MacLean, Cameron and Reeds there. Don't think Zibanejad makes it, I think he goes back to Sweden and I think Da Costa gets a chance, but we'll see. At this point without the signing of a top 6 player, it's clear we're going for youth - and I support that as evidenced by the enthusiastic play we had last year after the trades.
People around the league say we've lost a lot. Greening could replace Fisher and his offense pretty quick while Z.Smith is no Kelly, but he'll be serviceable - same with Condra. The wildcards are Regin, Butler (can he do it over a full NHL schedule? I think so personally) and Da Costa (if Zibanejad doesn't make it).
Rundblad might get to run wild out there and create a ton with Karlsson and Gonchar because we have little scoring up front, so that too will be something to look for.
Anderson and his awesome 3.2 million cap hit should help us be competitive.
NEELY wrote:Zibanejad is much more NHL ready than Da Costa right now, I don't think there is anyway that he doesn't make it at this point to be totally honest. Da Costa, O'Brien, Daugvanins, and Keller if he resigns are probably the 4 guys that get called up if someone goes down. That said, if Regin can't hold his spot Da Costa is going to jump in there and run with it IMO, his skill level is off the charts.
If Anderson can play really well in the games where the "rookies" are a bit lost and steal a few of those, maybe get 5-8 wins that they should have had no business getting, I think things could be alright in Ottawa. He doesn't need to be the Hart Trophy winner but he needs to be an all-star.

Diddle it, why not. Just let Zibanejad learn here. Fans love him, we have the coaching staff to do it, he looks like a kid who won't let his confidence get beat up too much. I like the point about Da Costa being the first call up, that might be a better idea. His skills are NHL ready, it's his little body that needs work, hopefully this summer is kind to him and he works his arse off.

I still remember the game against Philly where Da Costa was just kind of coasting out there without the puck. He had a chance to really finish his check hard and just skated right by... he didn't see the ice much after that. People were complaing about his lack of ice time there but Clouston made the right call there by not putting him back out. That was the point where I think it was clear he wasn't NHL ready. NHL skill for sure, not a question. NHL grit, effort, and attitude, not so much right now. I'm not saying he doesn't have it in him, but at this point he hasn't put it into his game as a pro.
