In the last week I've been on several fan sites (NHL) and one specific San Jose site. I can say that almost to a man, they are lamenting the Heatley trade right now. In fact the general consensus (take it with a grain of salt as they lost last night), but even though he had what you could say was his best game of the conf finals last night, most are willing to trade him and their first pick back to us for Milan.
Funny how perspective changes, but looking at that deal now, with how he played this year and in this playoffs, and his cap hit, I'm satisfied with the deal. I would have like the Edmonton deal better, but I'm ok with what we got.
Even worse:
In order for the Sharts to get Heatley, they had to trade Ehrhoff for nothing. Then they lost Michalek in the deal (and Cheechoo, but they could have buried him or bought him out).
So...if you were to add Ehrhoff and Michalek to the lineup, do the Sharts come a lot closer to making the Vancouver series go long - or even win it? I think it's safe to assume Michalek would have scored more than 3 goals or whatever Heatley did and Ehrhoff would have been a monster on their backend - especially on their PP with Boyle, which struggled (and cost them the game last night).
In conclusion, I think that trade LOST them the series and a chance at the Cup this year...and there's 3 more years of it!
I'm delighted by all this.
