Dear lord, neither is Melnyk though, that scares the pants off of me.

That's quite true, but LTIR isn't a very glamorous way of going out if you're the longest serving captain in the league. Like Brind'amour, I'd be surprised if Alfie just shelved himself like that. Although, if he did, I assume he'd begin on-ice coaching to be as close to the team as possible - which would be very interesting and perhaps the beginning of a career in NHL coaching?

True. Ideally you want the pomp and ceremony of Alfie retiring rather than ignoring the elephant in the room while he's on LITR. As mentioned by others we probably aren't spending to the cap so we'll likely have extra space to accommodate for his retirement. I wonder if they plan on Alfie coming up through the coaching ranks or the GM office?

As an assistant perhaps? I can't imagine he just walks in and gets the GM job.

BTW - no one should really believe this retiring stuff until Alfie says it himself. No doubt, this is just Yost or whoever guessing.

Wouldn't he be off the cap on LTIR? Wouldn't it be better to go on LTIR until the contract is almost over than then retire?

Can you buy out the contract of someone that's on a 35+ contract and save on the cap hit?

Also, to address SD's post, this isn't to say that I think Alfie is retiring/should retire. I hope it's clear that my posts relating to the topic are really just a feeling out of what would happen if the injury is more chronic and/or more serious than the original timeline indicated.

Nope. Best you can do is LTIR, which in effect allows you to spend over the cap to replace the player. That money can never come off the team's cap until the contract is done.

EDIT: or, I guess, *gasp* if you trade Alfie.

Scratch that. Misread you.

RE-EDIT: had to look that one up. You can buyout a player on a 35+ deal, and it will save the team money, but it won't save on cap space.

From CapGeek:

"Teams are entitled to buy out player contracts for a portion of the remaining value of the contract — paid over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. Following are the buyout amounts:

* Younger than age 26 at the time of buyout, 1/3 the remaining value
* Age 26 or older at the time of the buyout, 2/3 the remaining value

The remainder of this explanation assumes the player was not 35 or older when he signed his contract (in which case a buyout saves the team financially but does not reduce the player's cap hit). "

Daniel Alfredsson is "weeks" away with an injury that will never fully heal, according to coach Clouston.

Well, that doesn't sound great. What kind of injury will "never fully heal"? Could the end of the Alfredsson era actually be in sight? I don't like the sounds of this at all.

EDIT: TY is tweeting that it's the same chronic back injury that forced Mike Bossy to retire that's plaguing Alfie.

Wounds caused by Dark Magic never heal. Remember George's (or is it Fred's?) ear being blasted off? Can't heal that stuff, even with magic.

I wonder if Alfie ever recovered fully from that Bell blindside, personally.

bhahahaha...

I'd also like to know the context of that statement. Did Cory mean even heal this season, or ever, period end of story.

He's not a Dr. and can't play one on T.V. even if he wanted to.

Calling Dr. Chow....

I was thinking the same route Yzerman took or something similar. And yes, i'm not fully buying this for a second. We'll see what Alfie says about this when the time comes.

I think, if I understand correctly, that the LTIR cap savings only kick in if his replacement causes us to go over the cap. That is, if we have $10M in cap-space, the LTIR contract counts against the cap. If we're at the cap ceiling (not a dollar to spend on a replacement), the value of the replacement can put us over the cap up to the value of Alfie's salary.

That's how I understand it. If the replacement causes us to go over, the injured player's salary is the amount of cap-buffer that we have.

EDIT: Holy Dung. Could I have made my point less clear? See RP's post above for a far less convoluted explanation of the LTIR buffer.

Anderson just said this is a great situation for him down the road and he said he's been treated with world class since he's gotten here.

That's good news. I'd love to get him signed to $3Mish x 3 years. If he likes it here, let's hope that he's willing to take a fair deal to stick around.

That's great, I am probably reading too much into it but it implies he either wasn't treated very well in Colorado or Ottawa is really going all out to make a good impression aka Kissing His Donkey. Then again we tend to treat our players very well here.

Great first game for us we'll have to see how he does down the road.

Giguere had 2 shutouts for his 1st two games for Toronto but now he's pretty much lost the spot to Reimer much like he lost it to Hiller in Anaheim.

We should try and sign a solid backup so we have some sort of safety net if he gets injured or has a bad streak.

SensFan71 wrote:some interesting comments from Pierre Dorion, I really didn't think Silfverberg would be ready that quick

He definitely believes Rundblad will be in the line up contributing next season and had nothing but good things to say about Jakob Silfverberg.

Dorion says Silfverberg translates into a second/third line forward and he expects him to be an Ottawa Senator at some point next season.

Also seemed very excited about the idea of having two first round picks. Expects that whoever they take first will be in the line up contributing next year too.

Dorion really likes the depth of this year's draft compared to last year and feels that they can be in a great position moving forward with two 1st and 2nd round picks.

Also worth noting that Dorion guarantees that, by the end of next year, Silfverberg will be an Ottawa Senator.

My apologies if someone already posted this, but TY has confirmed that Regin is done for the season. Here's hoping he can bounce back and start next season the way we all thought he'd start this season.
