Both sides would like to have a decision by Sunday to allow for trade options on Monday.

I guess that means Phillips is open to a trade then.

Or he's open to the perception that he's open to a trade. He's not going to have much bargaining power if he let's it be known that he'll stay here at any price, under any circumstances.

He has all the power as it is. He can simply walk away on July 1 to sign with the highest bidder. Any indication that they can potentially get something for Phillips is a nice safety net for the team.

Bashing Phillips again eh? You're such a Phillips hater. You Spezza fanboys are all the same.

Laugh1

You got me.

I have maintained throughout this entire process that trading Phillips for a 2nd would be the wrong move, short & long term. If we have to, we have to. But I'm very glad to see that we're exhausting all avenues first before it comes to that.

I think Phillips has been it pretty clear that he wants to stay. Now it's just a matter of getting a number that makes sense to him, and which the organization can handle. Phillips will only be traded, I think, if his demands or ours are unreasonable. By saying he's willing to be traded, Phillips is saying he won't take any old offer -- it has to be legit.

At least that's how I read this.

I hear the Phillips extension is done by a ton of tweets. One of them said that fans 'wouldn't like the number'. Does that scare anyone else?

I wouldn't put too much stock in that. My guess remains 3x3.

I'm not sure if you meant to be ironic, but that's precisely the figure that sources are reporting. Sounds about right, too.

I have to disagree, but here's a way to try to make it more palatable for you:

Perhaps this offer is made and the deal happens because there's a trade in place to ship Kuba out. Just saying.

Not meant to be ironic. That's just what made sense to me. Murray suggesting that his offer represents a pay reduction, though not a significant one, led me to the $ figure. The fact that he's getting up there in years, but still a highly respected leader led me to the year figure. 3x3 puts him in a position to guide the youngsters along while taking a slight discount. Just makes sens.

EDIT: Just checked out the link. Ya, that's my reasoning too.

That would be a fans dream. But, why would Kuba have value over Phillips? Obviously I guess if the Sens are wantign to keep one, CP4 is the logical choice. But, if Kuba has trade value, surely Philly does too? I guess his value to other teams isn't worth Ottawa losing him.

Precisely. You don't get fair value back on Phillips if you trade him anyway; at best, he nets you a 2nd. To me, it's just not worth it. As for Kuba, it's not about the return, it's about clearing the train wreckage out opening up a roster spot.

I won't complain about a couple of hundred K. Nice signing.

If we can trade Kuba for a 4th + expiring salary dump (I hope, I hope) and Campoli for a 2nd/3rd, and re-sign CP to a 3x3, I'm happy. That opens up a couple roster spots for next year and gets us a reasonable return. That's ideal in my mind.

Next year we'd have Phillips, Gonchar (hopefully much improved), and Karlsson as locks. Then a combination of Lee, Carkner, Rundblad, and Cowen making up the remaining 4. Carkner is the likely choice for the 7th.

That works for me. We've always got UFA and callup options to plug holes. We re-sign Hale or sign someone similar for insurance, and we're set.

it is too much, but i dont think that salary will be a problem for us. we should have plenty of cap space for the next few years. also from what ive read the offer includes a limited ntc for the last 2 years. so we could ship him out at some point if there is interest.

that said, i would have preferred 2.5/3 or 2.5/2

As bad years go, his has been pretty epic. I think $3M per would be fair. We'll see in the next couple days I guess. The only thing that I can be sure of is that, regardless of what happens, there will be plenty of disagreement over whether or not it was the best decision.

Did Phillips sign a new contract? I can't find any news on it or twitter action. 3x3 sounds fine with me but is it confirmed by any reputable sources?
