I'm sure someone can find a pod cast for the exact quotes but it's just another piece of in dressing room evidence that Spezza has a heart and is actually a leader.

Well, we have fairly strong evidence to the contrary, what with him being called The Tin-Man on numerous occasions. What does Donovan know, anyway. Sarcasm

Seriously, though, would you expect him to say anything else? Especially after Alfie has come out and endorsed him.

Spezza being made captain & Spezza actually becoming a real captain are two entirely different things.

Captaincies now have more to do with PR & selling tickets & pretty faces anyway. Being named a captain doesn't mean that you actually have those qualities we all associate with real captains (the Messiers and so on).

Spezza will change minds if & when he puts it all together. To date, he hasn't done that, and people need to stop pretending that that's not the case.

This whole thread is a dedicated to antagonizing so-called Spezza haters in a feeble attempt to say 'haha, you're wrong'. Guess what, Spezza being made captain won't mean squat if he never lives up to the name. Horcoff & Ladd are captains right now too. Do I think Spezza can be a captain in that sense? Sure. Pretty dubious distinction tho', if you ask me.

I wish you wouldn't try and mask your opinions as fact, other than that I have to respect the post because I agree with a good chunk of it.

Also, what's your issue with Ladd? He seems to have done a tremendous job thus far.

I'm pretty sure no one has said that he has.

Point to one assertion that I present as fact. That Spezza hasn't yet put it all together? If you think he has, you're in dreamland.

All I have to say about this is, don't rub the lamp if you aren't really to deal with the genie. This entire thread is purposefully antagonistic.

There is no guarantee that Spezza will be here much longer. In fact, if he isn't presented with an A, I'd say that's a sign he's moving on.

Just though I'd dig this back up; just for fun Smile

The thing is I don't care whether or not you think he's a tin man or whether or not you think he can be a Captain and leader in the true sense of the word.

I actually care about what Alfie says and what a guy like Donovan says and listen to their takes and put some weight to them. If you want to continue with your assertions that Spezza is only going to be a Captain for PR that's entirely your choice but it's looking more and more like it's just up in your head and not based in fact.

I would expect him to say who he thought would step up. They didn't ask him if he thought Spezza would step up. They asked who he thought would step up. He could have said Neil or he could have said Phillips is already leading that room or someone else. No one was forcing him to say Spezza.

Edit: This thread is about Spezza being a "future" captain and being a leader right now. Donovan sees Spezza as a guy that can and will step up and be a leader, Alfie endorses Spezza as the next captain which is probably at least 2 seasons from now.

So, I'll go start a thread called "Tin Man for Captain," engage in long conversations with other like-minded members, & everyone will be cool with it & all the people with erect little Spezza-ons will stay away from the thread, right?

Riiiiiiight.

If you have an article in a paper and quotes from players go for it. This thread wasn't started to tick you off and fellow members that have your take on Spezza. It was started because of the article written in the Sun and updated because another player, who played with Spezza last season, chose Spezza as being a guy that will step up with Fisher traded and Alfie on the shelf. He also said he's a guy that cares, he's vocal and is a leader.

This thread isn't suggesting that Spezza is now the all around all put together player that is a true Captain. A lot of people give Spezza flack and suggest he's soft as butter and couldn't care less about anything but his paycheque. It's important to post an opposing opinion on the seemingly false impression people have.

I wouldn't have started this thread if there wasn't any content in here but my opinion.

Wasn't it Alfie that suggested Spezza be captain after he retires? Good enough for me.

I think they're handling it the right way. Spezza gets the "A" while he grows into the "C". He's not going to be handed the "C" out of nowhere.

That's exactly what I'm saying you're pointing out as fact. Unless you're in the room you have no idea what the situation is.You're entitled to your opinion, but stating as a fact is wrong, someone as educated as yourself knows the difference.

I like having opposite viewpoints on this board though, it keeps other in check, so please continue to stick to your gun's.

While I'm on record saying that I think Spezza could (and eventually would) wear the "C" I still thought they'd give it to Phillips first.

If Spezza is ever made captain, it will be for the wrong reasons -- keeping him happy (given his contract, that's needed on our end) & organizational PR. True heart & soul guys aren't made captains very often any more (think of the Ethan Moreaus, Chris Clarks, Jason Smiths, etc., etc.). Organizations & managements (& not the guys in the locker room) now make these decisions largely with an eye to who puts up points & who has the baby face.

well said rooneypoo
