Seems like the logical next step.

Kelly. No ifs ands or buts.

There is no guarantee that Spezza will be here much longer. In fact, if he isn't presented with an A, I'd say that's a sign he's moving on.

Trading Spezza would be a signal of a tear down burn it to the ground re-build IMO.

Yeah, we certainly aren't replacing him right away at the draft, and we damn sure aren't landing a guy to replace him in July. Unless of course we snag Brad Richards out from under the nose of Burke.

We could afford to massively over pay with Fisher and Spezza money off the books.

Good god, don’t mention over-paying. This is what we did with guys like Fisher, Kovalev, Gonchar, etc. This is partially responsible for the mess we’re in currently.

Unfortunately, that's what we have to do to attract players it seems. At least we have the flexibility to do that if that's the tipping point.

True enough. Let's just hope we over-pay for the RIGHT players (this time).

Overpay to the moon - as long as we're bringing in someone good!

Apart from his contract until 2015 and his NTC you mean...

Wink

Update on the Spezza as a leader "debate" - Shean Donovan was asked on Team 1200 yesterday about who he thought would step up as a leader in that dressing room with Alfie out and Fisher traded and Donovan said Spezza. He said he cares about the team and he's vocal and a leader.

I'm sure someone can find a pod cast for the exact quotes but it's just another piece of in dressing room evidence that Spezza has a heart and is actually a leader.

Aside from playing with Lemieux, Iginla, Owen Nolan and Joe Sakic, Donovan can hardly be considered an authority on what it takes to lead a pro hockey team.

So, not much experience recognizing leadership qualities then?

Well, we have fairly strong evidence to the contrary, what with him being called The Tin-Man on numerous occasions. What does Donovan know, anyway. Sarcasm

Seriously, though, would you expect him to say anything else? Especially after Alfie has come out and endorsed him.

Spezza being made captain & Spezza actually becoming a real captain are two entirely different things.

Captaincies now have more to do with PR & selling tickets & pretty faces anyway. Being named a captain doesn't mean that you actually have those qualities we all associate with real captains (the Messiers and so on).

Spezza will change minds if & when he puts it all together. To date, he hasn't done that, and people need to stop pretending that that's not the case.

This whole thread is a dedicated to antagonizing so-called Spezza haters in a feeble attempt to say 'haha, you're wrong'. Guess what, Spezza being made captain won't mean squat if he never lives up to the name. Horcoff & Ladd are captains right now too. Do I think Spezza can be a captain in that sense? Sure. Pretty dubious distinction tho', if you ask me.
