OK I am now reading Book 4 of A song of ice and fire (Game of Thrones on screen).
I won't go into details but if you're just watching the TV show I believe you are gonna die of impatience after the end of season 2 (I believe they are doing a book a season?), and even more after season 3. At the same time, the story is just freaking amazing they will keep their audience for sure. TONS of characters play majors roles. Season 1 looks pretty small compared to the rest of the series, which is pretty insane to think about. The fantasy part also starts to get more intense (end of season 1 pretty much started it)
I think A storm of swords (Book 3) is the best book I've ever read. The twists, murderings, betrayals, conspiracies and surprises and disappointments (Ned Stark style) are 10 times more powerful than in Game of Thrones (book 1)
I'm reading Book 4 now (Feast for crows), it gets a bit slower but still awesome.
Can't wait to see all of these on screen, some scenes should be pretty crazy good. I hope they have a good budget now.
