Well, McGuire highlighted Cowen's play at one point in the game showing some highlights of him taking out Swedes in the d-zone and winning puck battles and making solid outlet passes out of the zone. Later in the game he was harsh on Cowen and his partner for "watching the puck" when it lead to Swedish goal.
IMHO Cowen has looked good and he looked good again yesterday. He's never looked perfect to me though. Sometimes he doesn't clear the zone that well and it's lead to the odd nasty turn over. Some have said his game will translate better to the pros but I have no clue. I've been impressed but not blown away. I'm really not one to judge though.

Good or bad?
Both. Call it a scouting report of sorts.
Unbelievable! I just lost everything I was about to post. Time to start all over - see you in an hour.

Round two.
I think we can all admit that Lehner did not have a great game yesterday so take that into account here.
I have been tracking Lehner's progression for as long he has been Ottawa Senator property. I want to see improvements and I want to see more confidence from the player that Ottawa has their entire future riding on.
In order for me to share my thoughts with you, you need to see early video of Lehner so you can see where I am coming from in my assessment.
From those early videos you can tell Lehner is very well coached, as his demeanor was excellent in those videos. If you watch his positioning when the puck is on or below his goal line, his foot is anchored to either post like a steel bolt. It's not going anywhere. For a goalie of his age and raw skill, he's extremely systematic in those older videos. His movement is very precise and sharp, even when challenging shooters. You can really get a sense of how much influence Michael (Robin's father) has on him. We all know that the elder Lehner has coached and mentored Henrik Lundqvist as well. Because of that connection, Lundqvist and Lehner have some similarities. It's actually pretty scary to think about. He could be like a super-sized Lundqvist that actually plays above his crease, not on his goal line. That is fun to think about.
Another big thing I take from those older videos is that Lehner was all legs back then. He has powerful, strong leg work. He's not the fastest, but really strong and very well balanced. His upper body positioning does need work tho'. He is really hunched over in some situations in the second video. He has the "palm out" or "fingers up" glove hand positioning and his hands are pretty far in front of him, so he tends to look hunched over. The more he evolves, the more straight up and down his back will be, which will make him that much bigger in the net and down in the butterfly.
Now let's fast forward to yesterday's game and look for improvement, similarities and changes in Lehner's game. Remember, yesterday's game was not a good one for Lehner but it will still allow us to examine his style almost a year later.
Right off the bat, Lehner is still as intense and competitive as ever. From the little hop you may have noticed in the 2nd video; to how protective of his crease he was in this game. He is now the master of his crease - nobody else is allowed in it, ever. He takes it very personally. That wasn't a facet of his game before, it is now. Where does he get this from? Henrik Lundqvist. Lundvist won't even move or leave his crease for Ice Girls when they try to clear snow.
Lehner, on mutiple occasions gave forechecking Canadian forwards a stiff-arm with his glove, a blocker shot and 2 stick jabs when they were trying to get to the Swedish defencemen who was behind the net setting up the breakout. On the first Canadian goal, Lehner used his glove to push Foligno out of his crease instead of keeping it in position. He needs to control those emotions better. Actually, he needs to unlearn that aspect of his game. He wasn't doing that a year ago, but he is now for some reason. NHL players will tear him apart if they know he is that protective of his crease and that will eventually get Lehner off his game.
Lehner still uses the "catchers mitt" style with his glove positioning. There is nothing wrong with that, but I did expect him to go to the more traditional horizontal glove hand. That "palm out" style was in full view with 4:19 left in the 1st period when he let in a very weak goal.
Lehner is still very hunched over with his upper body and that led him to fall forward on many lateral movements that he had to execute. The 4th goal was evidence of this when his upper body was so far forward in the butterfly position that he couldn't push accross or "pad skate". Hi left skate lost its edge from being forward so much. So many times Lehner just sprawled his body face down on the ice like a prone snow angel. His lack of balance was to blame. I was surprised to see that, that technical change should have been corrected by now, no questions asked.
Rebound control was atrocious; another direct result of leaning forward too much.
Lehner is as mentally strong as they come. When the game mattered most, Lehner turned it around. I saw that with 6:35 left in the 3rd period. It was like a light switch was turned on. He played a perfect game from there on out; although he did lose his net once with roughly 2:20 left in the 3rd.
My PVR ended its taping with 3 minutes left in overtime and I was furious. Haha.
All in all, I'm sorry to say this but Lehner's game has regressed. Take into account that this was not a good game for him though. This season has been a waste of time for Lehner and his development. I wish I was the type of guy to say I told you so. It is what it is; we can't change the past.

Wow, great report on Lehner. The instance mentioned where he made contact with Foligno instead of maintaining position is a quick fix, but quite important.

Yeah that was a very good analysis, clearly from someone who knows what he is talking about. Roche for Sens goalie coach!!!!
Awesome videos! I wonder who recorded those?
I hope Lehner can rebound, because really, Sweden would have been in trouble if they couldn't score all those goals. Canada's goaltending has to be better - rarely has Canada HAD to rely on stellar goaltending, when they are able to scroe 7+ goals, but obviously against the better teams (Russia, Sweden and USA) they will have to tighten up defensively.

Your videos made it easier for me to get a handle on Lehner, so you get all the credit from my early analysis.
BTW, I am convinced the lighting was poor in the building, nobody can change my mind on that. The amount of easy rebounds that were given up by both goalies in that game yesterday was more than just nerves, positioning and focus.
I wish my original post didn't get wiped out somehow, it was more detailed. I went with the basics the second time around and did leaave some extras out.

Lehner was very humble and gracious to meet a Senator fan, hence why he did the interview for the site.
I just sent you a PM asking if that was you; now I see it was. Some of those questions made me laugh, you can really tell the fan in most of those questions. Very good answers from a young player tho'.
