Why would he be the odd man out over Anderson, who, as of now will not have played in 18 months vs 2 guys who are younger, bigger, and right in the line with the rest of the team in terms of their age?
Because no matter what team you are in the NHL, if you want to have success you go really slow with your young goaltender and have them backup your older and NHL experienced goaltender. Why would you go to battle with two guys who have potential, but no NHL success? Your begging for disaster - and frankly this city has had its fair share of goaltenders Dung the bed, we don't need our young franchise goalie to do the same.
Plus, Bishop is good, but he's nowhere near as good as Craig Anderson is, come on...In fact, right now Lehner has the 'potential' to be as good (or better) than Anderson, but the reality is he's not. It just doesn't make sense to trade Anderson. Now...if you're talking about Anderson's final year - at the trade deadline and we all like what we see from Lehner - and by that I mean he's stolen the job and is posting a +.915 save%, then you look at it, otherwise we have the money to keep Lehner's mentor - and we will.
Oh yah, Luongo, Lundqvist, Quick, Fluery, Ward, all these guys had to wait years right? No wait, they didn't. Guys can earn jobs in other ways than "beating" out another guy. Sometimes when a guy does everything asked of him you open up a spot for him and Lehner is going to get that spot. It's only a matter of time.
You still as of yet haven't responded to the fact both Lehner and Bishop (who are NHL goaltenders right now) are playing and Anderson will have had 18 months off. The only thing you said was "well, everyone else is off too" like it some how had anything to do with Ottawa's situation.
Fact. Both Lehner and Bishop are NHL goaltenders.
Fact. Lehner and Bishop will be on 1 way deals next year
Fact. Pending a missed season Anderson won't have played a game for 18 plus months.
Fact. Anderson makes more than both guys combined.
Fact. Anderson is older than both guys by a large margin and isn't part of the core going forward.
Not seeing the logic in keeping a 33 year old goaltender that hasn't played in a year and 1/2 vs a guy who was AHL MVP in the playoffs and potentially goaltender of the year in the AHL this year who is 21 and vs another guy who is 26 and has the potential to be a good #1 if not a great backup.
He's a vet that won't be better than he was last year, who only has 2 years left on his deal, and probably won't want to sit back and be #2. Wonder what the better scenario is? We all saw how things ended in Colorado when Anderson wasn't getting his way... Not saying it wasn't a different set of circumstances but how will a legit #1 take being put on the back burner? Bishop won't be that guy crying about it and he will be happy to be in the NHL.
