I like Penner too, but they need a sniper more than a big body methinks. A Boyes for example (although his cap hit makes it tough to manage). I'm really hoping Butler turns into a 25 goal guy in the next couple years and fills part of that offence.

I honestly think it's easier to find a snipper vs a Penner. Put him with Spezza and Gonchar on the PP and he is good for 30.

Regardless, I don't see Edmonton taking him unless we sent back some serious pieces (Foligno + prospect + 2nd) and that still doesn't clear the right salary.

I think money will play and a big role, but if Kuba is shopped it's because the organization feels like they need to spend more up front.

Edmonton just paid Foster 1.8 mil per season, they are desperate back there. Kuba for Penner is a little uneven but Kuba + for Penner is about right. If they have to give up a 2nd to take a run at a cup and think Penner is the piece to do it, well, you trade that 2nd.

I don't think the Oilers will have any interest in Kuba. If they expect Foster to be a top-four defenceman then they are pretty much set (although it's a weak group). I don't think they are looking for a quick rebuild so giving ice time to Kuba that will take away from the Chorney's and Petry's isn't a good idea.

Obviously this is where we disagree about the likelyhood of a Penner deal.

I think so. Anyways, Cowen is a Senator next year. Probably a good thing to so they can stagger Karlsson/Cowen/Rundblad.

i'd kind of be surprised if this is the roster next year. i have a feeling we might just see someone new added to this team wether it be via FA or trade.

what do you guys think we'd be aiming at? now that cullen is gone...

Nothing, that was it IMO, they'll let the kids (Wiercioch, Cowen, Butler, Wick, Gryba) fight it out for a spot.

It should still be interesting to see what happens next year when both Runbland and Wiecioch are presumably ready for the big time. But having 2 rookies coming in is better than having one guy come in for sure.

By then, Rundblad may still be considered an NHL rookie, but he'll have had 3 full seasons under his belt playing for the second best league in the world.

And Cowen might be a rookie, but he's a physically mature player, so he can at lest handle himself with the big boys.

How did we get to the assumption that Cowen will be on the team and not Wiercioch?

I distinctly remember hearing Tim Murray on in the afternoon before the draft, talking about how they fully expect Wiercioch to push for a spot, but that Cowen is likely a year away. He mentioned that of all the defense men prospects that Wiercioch was the most ready for the NHL

Just curious whether the Teams stance has changed, or if it's just opinion on this board.

Everything that's been said Weircoich is no where near Cowen's level right now and Cowen has the advantage of playing in The CHL vs The NCAA, it's a huge jump from College.

Hmm...ok..The only reason I ask is that I've heard the Murrays a couple of times and not once have they talked about Cowen being in the NHL next year, but both have talked about Wiercioch.

While I'll say Cowen has looked good at the prospects camp, Wiercicoh doesn't look out of place. I was just wondering where this came from because to my knowledge the team hasn't changed their stance.

Weircioch thinks he has a good chance at making the team according to what he said in an interview. Says he still feels that way even after they signed Gonchar.

But Butler can do it no problem and lead the Sens first line to the promise land. Haha.

Gotta love talking out 2 sides of your mouth, but I digress. No need to carry this convo on.

Hm, pretty sure it was a Cowen vs Wiercoich debate, no need to use common sense, I get that Notch. Always fun when people actually put words in other mouths instead of actually using logic. But hey, nice to have ya back Notch.

Well unless they trade 1/2 their D core then only one rookie is going to make it out of camp. Cowen defently has the advantage playing in the league he has vs Wiercoich leaving his league early to sign a pro contract.

Steve "Notch" Johnson, Dobber contributor. He was a member here a while back and had a real hard time over here, for all kinds of reasons. Every time someone acts really unreasonable, N4L assumes its Notch operating under a new name. Notch did create a number of accounts, to be fair, so its not unreasonable of him to think so.

Just don't assume that 1) running an NHL team is anything like running a real hockey team, that 2) "Heatley will never be traded" (LOL), and that 3) having an injury history instantly and unalterably condemns you to further injuries (especially as concerns Leclaire), and you'll be fine.
