I think he'll get max 55-60 points...I don't see Gonchar getting 70 points as a 37 year old, as the most he's ever gotten was 67, about 5 years ago and 7 years ago.

Yes, I forgot about Boston. I think that Ottawa is just behind them, so 5th in the conference.

Ottawa is the best team in The NE IMO now. Toronto cant touch us, Buffalo Miller's are not all that impressive, MTL had a miracle run that ended up with them getting Dung kicked, and Boston, well they are pretty good but could still struggle with their current blueline.

All in all, I think Ottawa will finished somewhere between 2nd and 5th in The East because Washington is going to run a much through that division again.

Wow. You're really reaching here.

People aren't allowed to dislike this signing? I've been the most vocal today about this, and I've freely acknowledged his offensive abilities. It's everyone else who needs to take the rose coloured glasses off and realize that Gonchar isn't the be all end all. In fact, I see plenty of downside to this deal, which I've stated more than once. Very few people here want to even acknowledge that.

The downside is Gonchar getting injured, that's about all I can see. If
he's healthy he gets 60-70 points, he is jsut as good defensivly, maybe
better then A Train, and he is a guy a lot of the kids like KArlsson
can learn from.

There isnt a whole mess of downside here.

Gonchar is good defensivly, I dont think I have ever watched a game in the past 5 years and said to myself. "Wow, Gonchar really screwed up there". There was obviously that goal vs MTL in the playoffs but he was obviously thinking he had no angle to shoot or get to the net with the back checker. If Flurry doesnt crap the bed there it's not even a topic.

Anyways, Gonchar is a good D man in all aspect and the only thing he cant do that A Train does is block shots. Also, if Kuba is in the lineup during the playoffs, I dont even think Sutton dresses as much as I like the guy.

People are not giving Kuba enough credit here as well. He's now playing the number 3, 4 D man role and wont be relied on to do it all.

We must be watching a different player. He's nothing special defensively from what I've seen and have tendencies to be lazy. We are not anywhere close to being as good defensively with him as opposed to when we had Sutton and Volchenkov.

We can definitely agree that Kuba not being relied on so heavily is a good thing!

A dime a dozen now? Classic. Oh how the memory shortens once a player leaves town.

I can't even begin to understand this logic. We are paying 1.5 more for Gonchar because of what Volchie MIGHT have gotten?

I think Volchenkov will take a pay cut and re-sign. He'll want to play with a fellow Russian d-man Smile

HA! We have no money left. It would be a very big pay cut.

I've thought fleetingly (fantasy) today that A-Train would end up taking 4 with us, so Murray's trading Kuba for a pick next year like Meszaros to make room. Smile

I doubt it happens though obviously.

I agree with the logic though, Gonchar's a way better all around D-man than A-Train, for as little as what could be 1 million dollars more. That's a no brainer for me.

Now Volchenkov isn't a dime a dozen, he's a warrior, that's why he's so highly regarded - and I love him and will miss him, but someone who can only block shots doesn't really interest me anymore, unless it's Sutton @ 2 million (I liked him too).

Our payroll is at $57,140,834. We have $3,109,166 in cap space with a few more players to sign... Regin, Foligno, Campoli.

I was talking about those who think we are "worse" defensively. I agree, if defense consists of laying guys off and blocking shots.

Bang on. I love Gonchar's offense, but I don't think he puts us over the top. I'd put the East right now at 1) Pittsburgh 2) Washington 3) Philadelphia 4) Ottawa.

Let's not forget about Boston, who could be better as well with a full year out of Lucic and Savard (if he's still there).

I think we are still a middle of the (playoff) pack team and should finish around 5th in the conference.

The thing that's being overlooked about Gonchar he too, is the fact that he's missed 77 games in the past two seasons. That's damn near half the games. He won't be so much of a bargain if we average 40 games out of him at $5.5 million will he?

No, you're right, an injured Gonchar most of the season and it's a failure.
Here's the thing, I think the signing is overpaid by 0.5M. So considering that, what exactly could we do here with 0.5M more in cap space?

I definitely disagree on that. Gonchar is a good all around defenseman with tons of offensive upside IMO.
