You're right, A Train didnt help us in the playoffs. You actually need the puck once in a while too, not just shutting down the other team.

Gonchar is good enough to go against other teams top lines and with Phillips there the puck movement will be very solid. What Ottawa had on the back end wasnt working and Murray has gone out and fixed it.

Our back end is more mobile, that's for sure... we'll miss the shot blocking for sure... but I'll take the added offense and mobility over that.

50 points in 62 games.. .I'm looking forward to this coming season. we paid 1.5M for a much better defencemen.. it's an easy decision. Why pay 4+ for A Train when a player like him is a dime a dozen.

Can we hire a new PP coach too?

ONe of the main reasons we lost to Pittsburg is that we let them put the pressure in our zone.
"shut-down" is a very relative term. When you get the puck in your zone and make a fast pass to the forward for a quick transition, it's the best shut-down style you can get.
I've seen enough of the other "shut-down" style with Hartsburg to be honest with you.

Look don't get me wrong, I like the signing. I just don't think Murray should be done addressing our defensive needs. (Despite what he has told the media).

You do know Gonchar is a very good D man in that aspect right? He knows how to play the position. The only thing that will make The Sens better defensivly is more of a committment from a guy like Spezza getting on his horse to get the puck back.

The way some people talk it sounds like we just signed MA Bergeron

Ya, that's exactly what I was thinking. Goncahr is a number 1 D man, simple as that.

We could still use a guy like Tallinder or Volchenkov, but there's no more $$$ to use.

Wow. You're really reaching here.

People aren't allowed to dislike this signing? I've been the most vocal today about this, and I've freely acknowledged his offensive abilities. It's everyone else who needs to take the rose coloured glasses off and realize that Gonchar isn't the be all end all. In fact, I see plenty of downside to this deal, which I've stated more than once. Very few people here want to even acknowledge that.

Bang on. I love Gonchar's offense, but I don't think he puts us over the top. I'd put the East right now at 1) Pittsburgh 2) Washington 3) Philadelphia 4) Ottawa.

The downside is Gonchar getting injured, that's about all I can see. If
he's healthy he gets 60-70 points, he is jsut as good defensivly, maybe
better then A Train, and he is a guy a lot of the kids like KArlsson
can learn from.

There isnt a whole mess of downside here.

Let's not forget about Boston, who could be better as well with a full year out of Lucic and Savard (if he's still there).

I think we are still a middle of the (playoff) pack team and should finish around 5th in the conference.

The thing that's being overlooked about Gonchar he too, is the fact that he's missed 77 games in the past two seasons. That's damn near half the games. He won't be so much of a bargain if we average 40 games out of him at $5.5 million will he?

We must be watching a different player. He's nothing special defensively from what I've seen and have tendencies to be lazy. We are not anywhere close to being as good defensively with him as opposed to when we had Sutton and Volchenkov.

I think he'll get max 55-60 points...I don't see Gonchar getting 70 points as a 37 year old, as the most he's ever gotten was 67, about 5 years ago and 7 years ago.

Yes, I forgot about Boston. I think that Ottawa is just behind them, so 5th in the conference.

Ottawa is the best team in The NE IMO now. Toronto cant touch us, Buffalo Miller's are not all that impressive, MTL had a miracle run that ended up with them getting Dung kicked, and Boston, well they are pretty good but could still struggle with their current blueline.

All in all, I think Ottawa will finished somewhere between 2nd and 5th in The East because Washington is going to run a much through that division again.

Gonchar is good defensivly, I dont think I have ever watched a game in the past 5 years and said to myself. "Wow, Gonchar really screwed up there". There was obviously that goal vs MTL in the playoffs but he was obviously thinking he had no angle to shoot or get to the net with the back checker. If Flurry doesnt crap the bed there it's not even a topic.

Anyways, Gonchar is a good D man in all aspect and the only thing he cant do that A Train does is block shots. Also, if Kuba is in the lineup during the playoffs, I dont even think Sutton dresses as much as I like the guy.

People are not giving Kuba enough credit here as well. He's now playing the number 3, 4 D man role and wont be relied on to do it all.

We must be watching a different player. He's nothing special defensively from what I've seen and have tendencies to be lazy. We are not anywhere close to being as good defensively with him as opposed to when we had Sutton and Volchenkov.
