I disagree. If you can use that money towards another area, then you should. No team can justifiably say that they prefer to have an expensive 4th line. If the coach sets it up like that, that just means the depth is awesome. And if you have lots of depth, you got lots of trade bait.

What do you think the case is in Ottawa?

That said, I think Kelly and Ruutu are on the block - very quietly, but for the first time I can't see where they fit anymore.

All I know is that teams usually give the most chances to guys who make the most money. Goalies, for example. Teams almost always go back to their most expensive goalie due to pressure from management. We've seen this many times in the past.

In my opinion, I don't think an expensive 4th line is needed. Most cup winning teams do not have an expensive 4th line, and they rarely use their 4th line in their playoff games anyway.

Maybe, maybe not. If we have 3 lines absolutely chalk full of guys like Regin, Kovalev, Foligno (who needs a Top 9 chance), it'll be really, really hard to justify Kelly and his 2.1 million salary literally on line 4 this year.

Last year the running joke was that we had the most expensive 4th line in the NHL, but really they were our third line, this upcoming year? Hard to say...

Maybe Kelly was the wrong example, we need him to be the defensive PKer of the team, but Ruutu...who knows.

I don't think we could call anybody untouchabel right now besides from Karlsson, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were shopping Kelly.

Kelly makes less then market value and just had a career year in goals and was a beast in the playoffs... Amazing people still think Kelly is on the block or should be dealt.

Who replaces Kelly for less then what he makes and on the PK? There isnt anyone in the organization that's ready to take on Kelly's role and there isnt a player via UFA that will get less then Kelly who could play his role.

Winchester? He wont hit 10 goals. Smith? Maybe soon, but not now. Who else? Kelly is a must in Ottawa and takes up very little of the cap.

Yeah, I may have jumped the gun on Kelly because he can also shift up the lineup when injuries happen. Ruutu though? We'll see how that goes. Although I personally also disagree with moving him.

If we do intend on re-signing Cullen, then I agree, Kelly is expendable.

Agreed on Kelly. I guess it depends on what the purpose of moving him would be. If it means adding Savard and pushing Fisher down to Line 1 C), then I'm sort of in favour. Maybe if it means a big upgrade on D too.

As much as I like Cullen, I wouldn't move Kelly to make room for Cullen.
