I've been lucky with uTorrent. I've been able to get pretty high speeds. If a torrent has a lot of seeds, I can typically pull 'em down at 2MB/s. Yes, MB.

You're with Rogers? 2 mega-*Bytes*? You must have a 25 Mbps access and are close to maxing it out with the overhead. My guess is they are not throttling in your area. Lucky b-word.

I've got the 24/1 rate but regularly exceed those rates.

And yes, mega-BYTES. As in... a 16Mbps torrent download.

I'm not sure if I hate you or envy you more. Either way, it's all Rogers' fault, right?

Clearly.

If Netflix was more like the one in the States I'd go with that and a totally different Internet company not named Rogers or Bell.

Edit: And Magic Jack for my phone service.

I like Netflix, a lot of older movies and TV shows I've never seen.

Since I spend every evening feeding and putting baby to sleep I can watch a lot of things and for $8/month I'm not complaining. Robbers charges way more for the Movie Channels pack and it's not much different to me.

I've been watching a lot of Mythbusters and Jackie Chan films lately (just saw Ip Man last night - so awesome).

Maybe if I watch everything that interests me I'll cancel but so far I like it, wish it was more like the US one but it's slowly getting there.

When you think you're getting close to seeing everything, they add more stuff.

They just added 2 of my favourite 70's TV shows: Rockford Files and Kolchak...

One disappointing thing is that they removed a feature that suggests alternatives when they don't have a certain title.

Night Stalker? I should get Netflix just for that -- to show it to the boys. I'm just afraid it will be a lot cheesier than I remember -- now that I've been through X-Files and Millennium, Lost and Fringe. Mind you, we're watching S1 of Dr. Who (the 2005 reboot) and they are enjoying it despite the cheese.

Some episodes are more suspenseful than cheesy. I'm sure they'll like it .

Futureshop.ca has the "Rogers" PVR (Cisco 8462, 160GB drive) for $399 (that's $100 off). The 500GB version is $499.

Futureshop.ca also has the "Videotron" PVR (same Cisco 8462 model with the 500GB hard drive) for $299.

So a $200 difference for the exact same hardware and the exact same retailer.

Neither are available on-line though... sold out. In-store only I guess.

Both are on comparable sales-- the Rogers one is $100 off while the Videotron one is only $90 off, which means that there is actually a $210 difference in regular prices. That's just insane. Why should it cost more? It makes no sense.

Seems challenged if it's the exact same hardware...

I know that Rogers is pushing "Whole-home PVR" but I'm not sure if it's an add-on. If it is, there could be two different versions of the 8642.

I'll try to find out.

Are you able to get Optic TV by Telus or SHAW Satellite? I've only seen the Telus commercials advertising something similar to whole home PVR like
Rogers. SHAW is my next provider unless a miracle happens with Bell like providing sportsnet and TSN at no extra charge plus lowering the rest of the bill significantly and giving me the receivers for free.

Not a fan of Satellite, but I did see a Shaw Direct ad stuffed in with the mail or the other flyers, so they are probably available.

I don't think Telus is here yet. I've been waiting since I first heard we could get employee discounts when I was working for Alcatel. That's probably close to a decade ago by now. I'm not holding my breath.

However Bell FibeTV *is* coming. I know they aren't any better, but their PVR *is*.

Although I'd read on DHC that a major IPG upgrade is being tested and will be rolled out sometime in the new year. It will be higher resolution and, hopefully, will include some more features (but I kind of doubt that).

Also, got confirmation that the Rogers and Videotron PVRs are exactly the same from a h/w perspective, but Videotron just subsidizes theirs more.

I wonder if it would be possible to buy a Videotron one and get it authorized on the Rogers network.

All these companies are in cahoots.
