Are you sure he had a torn AL? I seem to remember there was uncertainty over whether he had a strain or a tear, and which ligament was affected. The ACL controls the kneed when you rotate the leg. Without the ACL to stop it you could tear the meniscus or surrounding cartilage, maybe even dislocate the knee. You could make it much worse. You could certainly still walk with a brace, maybe even some light sports, as long as you do not need to turn (biking, jogging). Playing hockey at a high level? I don't know about that.
