We may see them in one or two games... especially if Buffalo clinches the Northeast tonight. Aside from that, it's good to get them hanging 'round with the big boys... give them a taste of what they're playing for.

Not Wiercioch I don't think. I think if he plays a game his contract kicks in, I wouldn't think that would be a good idea.

Lehner was signed to a 3 year entry contract.

Gryba was signed to a 2 year entry contract.

Both are going to Binghampton on an amateur tryout.

I guess the 3 year contract for Lehner and 2 year for Gryba recognize that Lehner is a higher quality(better) prospect and hence the greater committment.

Why is it called an amateur tryout? I assume that they are paid for their time Binghampton.

Can anyone shed any light on the subtleties of the contract?

The number of years of the player's ELC is always tied directly into their age at the time of signing:

18-21 years old = 3 year deal
22-23 years old = 2 year deal
24 years old = 1 year deal

25+ = not in the entry-level system, don't sign ELC deals

The amateur tryout contracts are, for sure, a nice way to get Lehner and Gryba playing in Bingo right now without burning a year off of their ELCs.

Thanks for the explanation!

On the Sens website, there are videos of the development camps. In the video titled "Who's at this Year's Development camp?", which is the 2008 camp, the players introduce themselves. When Wiercioch introduces himself, it sounds just like Marakh wrote.

CapGeek's finally got all the numbers / details on all of the Sens signings this past week or so:

Bobby Butler, 2 years (ELC), $900,000 per
Robin Lehner, 3 years (ELC), $900,000 per
Eric Gryba, 2 years (ELC), $572,500 per
Patrich Wiercioch, 3 years (ELC), $875,000 per

Two things to note here:

1) It looks like all of these deals are salary only, with no bonuses (or very limited ones). The new league max salary for ELC's this year is $900K, so BM got all of these guys signed for that or less -- a job well done, considering how highly touted guys like Lehner have been. I hope the young players themselves are starting to realize how much of an advantage "signing for cheap," as it were, gives them when it comes to getting games in the NHL.

2) Of all these contracts, only Lehner's is a "sliding" contract. That is, if Lehner player doesn't play 10 games next year (he's on an amateur tryout right now; his contract doesn't begin until the 2010-11 season -- if fact, only Butler's deal begins this season, i.e., 2009-2010), then the full year value of the contract transfers over to next year. All the other guys signed at 20+ years of age, so that "10-game" rule doesn't apply to them; the clock starts ticking on their deals next season.

So, we have Butler under contract for the rest of this year and next; Gryba for all of 2010-11 and 2011-12; Wiercioch for all of 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13; and Lehner for all of 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13, AND (provided he doesn't 10+ games for the Sens next year) 2013-14.
