I like the guy too but business is business.

we could then sign a hard hitting d-man at the trade deadline.

Melnyk has made it abundantly clear that burying 3M is unacceptable.

Just sayin if we are sitting in 4th place at the trade deadline, with a chance to pick up a player we need but cheechoo's contract is in our way-will he change his mind?

I sure hope that we're not facing the Pens first round should we be in 4th or 5th come playoff time.

That's an interesting point. I'm not sure, but I tend to see Cheechoo as the type of player that becomes most effective in the tight checking post-season.

The only players I worry about on this team, in terms of post-season play, are Spezza, Kuba, and Picard. The rest of the team, including the current 4th line, is full of players I'm more than ready to go in to battle with (figuratively speaking).

What? What about the rest of this year's 3 million?

If he wants to 'go deep' in the playoffs, then he might have to deal with it.

He wouldn't want to bury a 6 figure salary in the minors, so why would the fact that 3M becomes 1M by the deadline change anything?

Then he's full of empty promises. Remember that 3 million in cap space is = to about...7 million dollars in players. If he can't let Cheechoo go to the minors if a deal comes up, then he shouldn't have said we're going deep this year - because we obviously need upgrades - and we're right at the cap because of the injuries.

See, this is why Melnyk should shut it and let what will happen, happen.

I agree with this. If Melnyk really is serious about a playoff run then he can't very well tell Murray he won't allow him to do something like stick Cheechoo in the minors. The team could become serious contenders if they upgraded Picard/Campoli...

Chechoo's $3M is no-longer $3M at the deadline. Waiving him to the AHL will give you the pro-rated portion of $3M over the remaining number of games. If he had waived him at the start of the season, sure, different story, but I think there was still some hope that Cheechoo would score 15-20 goals. Even if he waives him now, the savings will not translate to a lot more than $3M at the deadline (the schedule is compressed because of the Olympics).

I still say we're hard up against the cap already and may even need to move/bury some salary just to keep below the ceiling.

It's sad to think that Z. Smith will be sent down as well as Brodeur when everyone is all healthy, but that's the way it is with the cap and a roster size limit.

The more Smith plays like he has been, the greater the odds are that OTT recalls him after the trade deadline, when the 23-man roster restriction is lifted and the remaining part of his salary won't really impact our bottom line much.

After what he's done so far, I can't imagine letting him rot all year in Bingo.

No doubt about it. As soon as they can expand... bring him up. Love what we've seen from him so far.

That's 3 legitimate scoring lines, and no 1st/2nd/3rd, just 3 lines that score.

I would be very surprised and even more disappointed if Donovan was traded

The guy sure spent enough dough on this team to be allowed to voice his opinion. He's devoted, committed and he speaks up. Good for him.

He wont. His cap hit from here on out is like 200K. He's worth that and much, much more for Clouston to be able to sit him out and count on him to still be prepared every game. And when he does draw in, he always leaves it all on the ice.

There's literally no chance Donovan gets traded IMO.

When the Sens get healthy - who sits? - Page 4 Icon_scratch But waiving Cheechoo at this point wouldn't give us $3 million in cap space, would it? Aren't we on the hook for whatever the amount of games he's played?

If I understand this whole cap thing correctly (and it's highly, highly unlikely I don't) then should Cheechoo's waiving only open up room for a similar cap-hit? Certainly it wouldn't give us enough room for a $7 millioner.

I'm wrong, it's when you acquire a guy making 7 million that he's down to around 3 at the deadline, not if you jettison a player.

My mistake. Ahhhhh!

Waive Cheechoo and call him back up. Worse case scenario is you pay half his salary this year and next year. If there are no takers send him back down, play out the rest of the season in the minors, and buy him out in the summer.

With Spezza possibly back Saturday someone needs to come out. We have 11 forwards playings lights-out right now. Sorry Cheechoo...

While we're at it let's just take a page from Bob Gainey's book and tell Cheechoo to go home, tell him we're gonna buy him out at year's end When the Sens get healthy - who sits? - Page 4 489887
