If we do drop down to a 22 or 21-man roster... we'll have the cap space that BM wants.

Who goes though?

That is the question.

I don't believe they will, should trim down to the 22, but who are the odd people out, Picard and Donovan?

"Defenceman Brian Lee, a former first-round pick (ninth overall in 2005), was anything but a happy camper when he learned Tuesday he'd been sent back to the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators. But Clouston said his stay on the farm will be anything but permanent. "We know he's not going to be down there for a long time," said Clouston. "Right now, this is for the betterment of the organization and maybe things change. But it's also good for him. He can't see that right now, but it does him no good if he's in and out of the lineup here right now as opposed to playing a huge role down there. He's still a young guy. He's going to be a very good defenceman in the NHL and sooner rather than later."

It's going to come down to who other teams have interest in. I just can't see them going the season with 23 including Winchester when he's healthy.

he keeps that up though and he can be expendable, his skill set isn't one that can't be replaced.

Well, I'm glad he's not happy... he shouldn't be... if he was happy, I'd be worried... hopefully he takes advantage of this oppty to play a big role in Bingo and skate his way back up to the big club.

Not a happy camper? Can't see the betterment of the team? That puts you in a bad position Lee. Accept the numbers and prove that you belong. Don't whine in Murray's office. You want to play in this league? Prove that it's essential that the Sens keep you here, don't Wing Dang Doodle and complain when you have a mediocre camp. Force them to keep you.

How close was Picard to Columbus I wonder? Howsen had been watching the Sens for months regarding Vermette. He's the guy that would know more about the Sens than most other teams. He passed on him obviously - but I wonder if he had given it some serious thought.

Exactly:

Clouston confirmed defenceman that Brian Lee was angry at being sent down to the AHL Binghamton Senators. Lee got caught in the Senators' salary crunch, and part of the decision to demote him involved his two-way contract. By moving him to the AHL, the Senators will be paying him just $62,500 ... a saving of about $800,000 compared to his NHL stipend.
"He should be. If you send a guy down in that situation and he's okay and comfortable then there should be a problem," Clouston said. "We expected him to be upset."

good post, even Schubert took his demotion with more class than Lee did, and Schubie has been here longer.

Guys, was there even a quote from Lee? All the article said was that he was not happy with the demotion. Did you expect him to be? Perhaps he echoed exactly what Clouston's words were, or perhaps he said nothing other than that he was not happy.

Nowhere does it say he disagrees with organizational goals being put ahead of his own.

Seriously, like Shabbs said, we should be worried if he wasn't unhappy.

This is our team: Senators Coach

The Senators roster is set.
Senators coach Cory Clouston confirmed this morning the club doesn't plan any changes through the rest of the week ... the 23 players left in Ottawa will be on the roster going into the season, which kicks off Saturday night at the New York Rangers. But, Clouston said no one -- particularly newcomers Erik Karlsson, Peter Regin and Matt Carkner -- should get feeling too comfortable.
"It's not like making a midget or junior team, every day they have to establish themselves," said Clouston today. "Their play up here will depend on their performance on the ice. They could be here for a week. They could be here for a year. Anything in between is possible as well."
Carkner, a Winchester native, said his parents were excited when he informed them late Tuesday he'd start the season with the NHL club.
"It's a great feeling just being here and being able to start the season after working hard throughout training camp," said Carkner. "I started training camp as a forward and I made it as a defenceman so you never know what is going to happen."

Lee might want to chill out on being upset. I wouldn't be too vocal about it if I were him. It's not like he's a complete fixture here yet.

Michael Sharp the B-Sens blogger had this to say about the demotion:

Michael Sharp wrote:Caught up with Brian Lee after B-Sens practice today. The third-year defenseman was sent down Tuesday by Ottawa.

Asked
for his reaction to Tuesday's move, he said: "Disappointed, obviously."
And then asked for his mindset returning to Binghamton, he said: "To
work hard. Work hard, play well. Winning's good for everybody, so try
to come down here and help the team win."

Lee declined to
comment on how things were left with Ottawa, or what was discussed in
his meeting with GM Bryan Murray. But asked if he expected to be back
up with Ottawa at some point, he said, "Yes, I do."

I must say, I'm completely ok with Brian Lee's reaction. He seems passionate, he has not requested a trade, so it's not like he's resentful or sulking. And I believe over the years he has taken the criticisms of his game and tried to improve himself.

After he signed his pro contract, one of the knocks on him was his defensive game, so he worked hard on it and improved it. His offense took a hit on this, but he became more defensively responsible.

Last summer the knock on him was he wasn't physical enough. So he worked on that as well, and during his call up last year, he was hitting a lot more, and he even fought someone.

If you want to criticize his skill level, or discuss whether he deserves a spot on our blueline, then fine. But i don't think it's fair to criticize his attitude when he's shown he's willing to do what it takes to play on this team.

I know, exactly how I feel about it. It's not like he's the be all to end all of defensemen. Chill out young man.
