To me, that's the same type of hit Phaneuf dished out last night. Didn't leave his skates BEFORE the hit, but they come up naturally with the follow through after.

Clean, hard, devastating.

If you liked that hit, you have to like the Phaneuf hit.

It's what they do.

Absolutely. I'm not trying to be confrintational here, rude, w/e you wanna call it. The SIMPLE fact is that is as text book a hit as you will ever see. If that's not aloud then body contact should not be taught at all to kids or teens.

The word "ignorant" does not mean lacking in knowledge, at least not exactly. There is a further implication that the facts are freely available but the person chooses to ignore them. So, yes, you may not mean to offend but the word is offensive.

Earlier in the thread I agreed that this was 100% the way the kids are being taught to hit since peewee. Yes, I understand that it has to change in the minors. But it's already changed in the OHL, right? Are there no hits in the OHL?

Head shots have been taken out, that's it.

If the guy lowers his head like that and buddy drives through him, Im not even sure if that's a penalty.

Also, dealing with kids and Jr's is a lot different because of the actual implications of getting injured. They dont get paid and it could effect the rest of their life in that aspect.

Professional levels it's a totally different game. They will be compensated for it. Whether that's a meat head view or not (probably is) that's the game.

I agree with the fact the shoulders pads and elbow pads are just a stupid size and made of insane material. THAT'S what should be illegal at the NHL level instantly.

Plastic materials on the upper body should be outlawed. Elbow pads are basisally only for prtection from the ice so you dont shatter you elbows, that's it really. I remember I left one at home for a game and I used a sock to prtect my elbow. The slash I took stung a bit more but it worked fine.

That's the main problem right there. A high-density foam on the outside of a harder material should be good enough for those areas

Its like goalie equipment, the NHLPA will fight tooth and nail to protect players who believe the gear improves their game. IF they haven't made changes after some of the injuries cast iron shoulder and elbow pads have caused by now they probably won't.

OK, so now you are bringing in a whole lot of other things, such as pros get compensated and juniors don't. The real issues is whether or not head shots should be in the game, or whether the league should try to do *something* to take them out.

It doesn't concern me if my suggestion is not exactly what they instituted in the minors; what concerns me a hell of a lot more is that *this* league has done nothing. And to say that it's OK for them to get hurt because they get paid for it is also not the strongest argument.

Cops get hurt, but I doubt anyone would say it's OK. They wear bullet proof vests to prevent injuries By some of the arguments I've heard here, they should be walking around in shorts and tees because if you get shot it's just part of the business they're in. And they get paid for it.

That's stupid and I've always said that crap should be illegal. I get that smaller kids need that much protection because bones are developing, along with muscles, tendons, so on. Kids are smaller, more vulnerable, so on, that;s fine.

Grown men want to deliver hits like that, wear the right gear. That IMO is gutless. Hitting to hurt I dont mind, I like it to be honest. Using something other than your body to do it (for the most part) is weak. Guys do put on those shoulder pads a lot of the time just for that reason, which is wrong.

Whether you agree with the principal of the argument or not, The NHLPA will take care of injured players along with the insurence on their contracts, The OHL and something like the ODMHA doesnt have that ability. Becoming somewhat of a vegtable as a teen and being unable to earn a living of any sort is a lot different then an NHLer who will get compensated. Those are HUGE factors is the illegal head shots.

It's not "OK" for someone to get hurt, but thats the risk they are taking, plain and simple. If Okposo ran into his own player with his head down like that and his helmet fell, head hit the ice, and died... what do you do then? It was an accident and unless they stop playing the game like its supposed to be player, injuries are part of it. No getting around it.

Protecting kids and teens is differnet then protecting grown men getting paid millions of dollars to play a game. Granted, NHLers are not the smartest group of guys in the world, but they are still smart enough to make their own choices.

If that Phaneuf hit is made illegal or deemed a penalty then hockey as we know it wont be played. No intimidation factors, no physicality, very little emotion, it goes on and on.
Nah, not buying it (that taking that hit out means taking hitting out).

And "difficult" is not a good enough reason when guys are getting carried out on a stretcher.

You would have loved it back in Roman times.
Nice generalization. Do you watch NFL or lacrosse? If I like those sports, does that also mean I was born in the wrong era?

I'm not condoning head shots or running players. All I was saying is that saying a player should be penalized for leaving his feet after a hit doesn't make sense. Anyway, I'm done with this argument, said my piece. I understand where you're coming from, I just don't think it's logical.

The NFL --as brutal as it is -- has actually done something to cut down on concussions. It may only be helmet-on-helmet hits, but it's something. And, besides, the only part of the equipment that's as hard as NHL players' shoulder/elbow pads is the helmet. Their shoulder pads are big and impressive, but they are designed to soften the fall rather than to inflict damage.

No one is arguing about the equipment in The NHL. Helmets have improved in an enormous way over the last 5-10 years though.

I forgot The NHL changed the glass. That was a fairly big deal 10 years ago.

Wprager, you can say he left his feet all you want or it was dirty, but taking that hit out of the game means body contact is gone, period.

That is a bit hyperbole don't you think? Are you trying to say that every time there is a hit or body contact the player leaves the ice with both of their feet?

I embedded it for you. All you need is the flash tags (like quoted above, but without the spaces inside the square brackets), and you change the URL slightly to replace the "watch?v=" with "v/".

Yeah, I remember that hit. I was actually at the game. They have a rule for that one, though, boarding.
