It sounds like we're not the only ones wondering why Dion Phaneuf was available, and why he got comparatively so little in terms of long-terms assets in return. It looks like many GMs didn't even know they were prepared to move him, and didn't even get a chance to make an offer:

I know that that's not the kind of news that I want to hear if I'm a Calgary fan, that's for sure...

If he saw what he liked from the Toronto package than he did the right thing. Publicly shooping a player of that magnitude could be a horrible PR move and horrible on the ice/ in the locker room if they don't manage to trade him away.

That being said, awful trade for the Flames.

so basically then Sutter could have sold himself short on the return he could have gotten for Phaneuf, did he really want him out of Calgary that bad?

Based on the return, I'm gonna say yes.

wow, very puzzling how the once one of the faces of the franchise gets outcasted without so much of an afterthought.

Sutter must've really wanted Phaneuf out of there.

I think Burke really pushed Sutter for the deal to happen and happen quick before anyone got wind of it and outbid him.

He wanted him out so badly that perhaps he did sell himself short. But people continue to sell Hagman, Stajan and White short.

The only reason that as isn't a strong return as it needed to be, in my mind, is that with the exception of Hagman, they're all pending FAs and in need of re-signing. You shouldn't have to trade your franchise defenceman for a bunch of question marks.

They must be prepped to re-sign Stajan. They couldn't have done this blind...I think...

As for White, he's an RFA. That's easier. But yeah, a few questions in there in termsof contract.

Burke said he asked for Phaneuf, and insisted.

Sutter did an amazing job in this trade. forget about all the players coming back the will be FA's or sorts. phaneuf was and is a problem in dressing rooms making 6.5 million long term. the only player sutter and calgary have to keep next year salary wise is hagman who makes 3 million.
sutter traded a headache and gained 3.5 million in cap space next year and beyond to sign players and fill holes that he wants.
great trade. there is a reason he wanted expiring contracts and that will be evident with the players he signs and moves he makes next offseason. this trade was amazing cap management for upcoming years and gave calgary some much needed offensive septh to salvage this season. i say again, amazing trade. 2 birds with one stone...actually three as they got rid of phaneuf as well

Yep, and Jokinen was the other problem.
