He signed Kovalev, when he was in high demand to boot, he got us the franchise goalie (hopefully...and I mean Lehner).
He really rolled the dice on Leclaire though, I hope that works for all parties involved.
Let there be no mistake about it: Murray has done some very good things here.
How he resolves this Heatley situation, however, will be his legacy in Ottawa.
Heatley was Muckler's legacy. Murray's legacy will be based on his draft picks, and the Bingo turn around, IMO. Your idea of a legacy is too short sighted.
you said it well, Muckler brought in Heatley, not Murray, he was coaching at that time and had little to say about the personnel I imagine that was brought in to play. Murray is a shrewd drafter rather than dealer, the Corvo/Eaves for Stillman/Commodore is proof of that, lost those players and both returns in that deal are gone to greener pastures. keep drafting well Murray and build from within.
Yeah! Its not like it was Murray who signed him to that massive deal... oh wait...it was.
That Corvo/Eaves trade would have looked mighty different if the idiots already on the team had come to play. It wasn't Stillman, nor was it Commodore that cost this team that year. Actually, they were both our leading scorers in the playoffs and along with the rookies, were our best players... COMMODORE. was. our. leading. scorer. in the playoffs!
The criticism of Murray's trading skills is unfounded. His trades have all been relatively equal for both us and the other team (except maybe the Mez trade cool) ). It is in fact his personnel decisions that have gotten us to this point of missing the playoffs. Hiring Eli Wilson as goalie coach; hiring Hartsburg; etc.
There really wasn't a whole lot he could do when you look back at his major signings. Who wouldn't have re-signed Heatley, Spezza, Fisher, and Emery in that off-season? Given the year they were coming off of, he actually signed them to discounts. Also, say what you want about Kelly, but that guy does his friggin job.
Murray has locked up the core to what appeared to be reasonable numbers and they've mostly repaid him by playing far below their ability.Regardless of all of that, how he handles Heatley will define his career in Ottawa. People will mention all the good he's done for Bingo and the choices he's made at the draft table, as will they mention the trip to the finals; but this Heatley situation will colour the entire discussion, thus defining his time here.
