Frankly, the best thing to come out of the deal will not be any single player, but the final exorcism of all distractions from this franchise (Emery, Heatley, coaching carousel, etc.). There have been too many over the last two seasons. A quiet, under-the-radar season is exactly what the Sens need.

Hmmm scratch . Interesting viewpoint. :___:

speak no evil 🇬🇬 . Volchenkov isn't going anywhere! He's one of the best shot blockers in the league, of not the best and has been a second goalie on ice for us in many instances

Why isn't Burns a part of this? ⭕

Because we don't need him. Sure it would be nice to add a "name", Spez, because that's all Burns is.

Think about how much better Burns is than Phillips or Kuba and I think you'll realize the answer is "not much".

He's different than those guys - by a lot. He's 6-5, 220, has a 100MPH shot that has deadly accuracy, mans the point on the PP, is defensively above average, but has offensive instincts that rival the very best in the league.

Talk about a future D...Burns - Wiercioch/ Karlsson - Cowen?

Best in the business.

His numbers are awfully underwhelming for such attributes. I would take your word for it, but I prefer to disagree. Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh!

Volchenkov is my favourite Senator, so I dont want to lose him either. But sometimes you gotta think of what's best for the team.

I think what he said backed up your point. Some may say Burns isn't that much better than Phillips or Kuba, but he's 7/8 years younger than either of them. And his offensive potential is much higher than what Phillips has accomplished.

Getting Burns back is about as good a centre-piece possible in return for Heatley at this point. For that matter, so is Koivu. And the mention of Burns, Wiercioch, Cowen and Karlsson as a top-4 (notice how 3 of the 4 are 6'5") is awe-inspiring.

That said, I don't see either of them getting moved. With Koivu gone, the Wild wouldn't have a centre for Havlat or Heatley. And I just don't see them giving up Burns, his recent down season not-with-standing.

Quote from Sens Chrip re the Minnesota offer:

While the proposed deal does not include stud defenceman Brent Bruns, it does apparently include Mikko Koivu, Nick Schultz and Tyler Cuma. Rumours are there would be other pieces involved both on Ottawa's end as well as Minnesota's. Sounds like the swap could include a salary dump on Ottawa's end and potentially Colton Gillies coming back from Minnesota.

Question to you other posters:

Other than Heatley, who would you like to see going back to the Wild? My personal feeling is that Chuck Fletcher would want Brian Lee. He is a Minnesota native, and a former Mr. Hockey Minnesota. Would you be willing to let him go as part of a package, e.g.:

To Minnesota - Heatley, Lee, Schubert, Smith

To Ottawa - Mikko Koivu, Nick Schultz, Tyler Cuma and Colton Gillies

A thousand times done. But I think we'd have to add something.

I am not sure I like those deals at all. I know a lot of other posters put NO value on Smith, Lee or Schubert but I do.

Miko Koivu is a nice second line center who is in his prime but he is not equal to Heatley. The rest is a wash IMO. Sure we get younger but not necessarily better.

Heatley he ain't, but long-term he could be a pretty solid replacement for Alfredsson. He also managed to put up almost 70 points in a very restrictive system in a division featuring some pretty nice goalies/blue-lines.

It'd give us the first one-two punch at centre that I can recall. He and Alfie together would constitute two-thirds of a near-perfect second line. His cap-hit is also less than half of Heatley's, which isn't the end-all be-all but certainly doesn't hurt either.

I don't think Murray could get away with dumping both Schubert and Smith in this trade, that is a lot of dead wood to receive.

I could see Kelly being part of the trade, I think he would fit nicely in Minnesota.

Dear goodness yes. Still not sold on Schultz though, but this is a great trade for the Sens. Especially adding another young stud on D in Cuma.

If not for the cap, I don't think we'd be talking about "dumping" Smith as much as we do. Chris Kelly is The Smartest Man in Hockey. You don't give that up unless Burns, who is the next Bobby Orr it looks like, is part of the deal. Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh!

Koivu would be great for us indeed, just wondering if Minny would part with this guy considering the role he must play for that team, mind you, if they want Heatley that bad to replace Gaborik and to play with Havlat, then Koivu it will be.

Can someone explain to me why Minny feels it needs to make a play for Heatley? Especially after acquiring Havlat...

Because they're still offensively challenged? Shrug

From a Minny perspective, I can see that adding Heatley while keeping Koivu and Havlat would be ideal... they would end up with a sweet offense with those three players.

But I can't see Murray not asking for Koivu in return.

And if they moved Koivu, are they really that much better off without us sending some other offense along with Heatley?

I guess I'm just trying to play Chuck Fletcher...
