PKC wrote:I'm surprised Cowen was rated the second best prospect. I envision Cowen as the heir in waiting to Chris Phillips' role. An enviable, rock-solid shutdown defenseman with the panache for punishing forwards with his imposing physique.

But Weircioch, good Lord. If this guy keeps improving at the pace he is, he will be a Norris trophy calibre defenseman in the NHL. If developed properly and with the right set of circumstances (luck and hard work), he will be a formidable number 1 defenseman capable of putting up massive offensive numbers and playing shutdown hockey with the best of them.

The only reason I pegged Karlsson ahead of him is because of the fact that Karlsson is potentially more NHL ready at this point than Weircioch.

But in terms of the more complete, well-rounded defenseman, it's hard not to go with the 6'5", and still growing, monster capable of putting up a point per game in the NCAA in his freshman year.

The sky's the limit for Weircioch.

My thinking exactly. As for Cowen, I think he can be much more imposing than Phillips. And I really like Phillips.

Just a quick plug :___:

Mark, sorry I *just* read your blog. In there you say that Wiercioch can't come to camp in September *and* go back to DU. Isn't there a way the Sens can sign an amateur tryout contract?

He would lose his NCAA eligibility if he attends camp.

Oh, well, in that case, getting an invite would not be enough, IMO. He'd be better to stay in college another year. Too many D-men in the hopper right now to guarantee anything other than a Bingo salary.

Wiercioch's video interview is up on the Sens website. I've never seen it before but he has a very impressive shot also. Kid's still 18 years old :****:

ON another note, our 3 top prospects all have Lidstrom as favourite NHL player eh...

I knew Karlsson and Wiercioch did, Cowen as well? I was kind of hoping they each emulate a different player -- Niedermayer (Karlsson), Pronger (Cowen) and Lidstrom (Wiercioch).

But I'll take The Three Lidstroms as a consolation prize.

I have to vote for Wiericoch here. *I have to figure out how to spell his name properly* (we should have a nickname for him. Smile )

I had the opportunity to see him show his stuff during a development camp a few weeks ago, and I've gotta say, he looks like he's ready to go now. I wouldn't throw him in the lineup yet, but if we had to, he'd be pretty darned good.

He has amazing hands and some really good speed. He's very quick and has some amazing puck handling skill. Silky smooth guy.

I think he will be very similar to J-Bo. I can't wait to see him in NHL action. Our D will be absolutely sick in 3 years. Ahhhhh!

So far I have Karlsson, Lehner and my next potential star is Wiercioch.

I think he has the tools to be an all-around star D.

Oh, for the record I went with a dark horse pick of Petterson. Even though I love what Weirchoch brings I hear this Pettersson kid may just leapfrog of Zubov and Regin in the depth chart wuickly.

Could be the best D in the league hands down. FingersCrossed

Are there any other ways of misspelling the kid's name? Laughing3

Seriously, though, Mark, where is part 2 of the prospects write up? It's Monday, hello!

I keep checking back for Mark's part 2 and I just noticed. Is Julie the only one deemed suitable for HockeyBuzz TV?

She'll rock you socks.

Also note - no more comments allowed on Julie's "I love hockey" TV web casts.

she's probably tired of marriage proposals, or maybe indecent proposals, one of those two. Laughing3 Facepalm
