Yeah, from July 1st to the end of training camp, a team is allowed to exceed the cap by no more then 10%. I can't see Elliott's contract taking us over the 10% allowance, so perhaps Murray is just being cautious.
Nope, we're nowhere near 10% ($5.8 mil) over the cap. In fact, if you stick primarily to the 1-way deals we have on file now and go with a roster of...
Heatley - Spez - Alfie
Foligno - Fisher - Kovalev
Kelly - Shannon - Neil
Ruutu - Winchester - Donovan
Phillips - Volchie
Kuba - Campoli
Smith - Picard
Spare F/D: Schubert
Leclaire
... then the Sens are actually currently UNDER the cap by $894,167 (according to CapGeek). Of course, tho', that figure leaves Lee (and Regin) in the minors, and leaves us with no backup.
So whatever is holding up the Elliott signing has nothing to do with any concerns about exceeding the off-season cap cushion.
Wow, now that I'm looking this over, our cap situation is not at all as bad as most people are making it out to be. I can't remember the last time we went with a 23-man roster all year long, and I don't see why we'd start now. Once Elliott is signed, all we need to do is clear about $2 mil to create breathing room for injuries, call ups, and trade deadline acquisitions. I have to think J. Smith is the guy who's going to give us that breathing room, one way or the other.
