as per Sens Chirp, I definitely hope this is a positive defining moment though, not a flop.

http://www.senschirp.ca/

Just got word from a source in Montreal that the Heatley deal will not be going down today. Murray is going to give each interested team a chance to put an offer in at some point this evening and then they hope to have a deal in place before the draft tomorrow.

As some of you are pointing out a Minnesota beat writer is speculating that the LA deal will include Frolov, a prospect/player and the 5th overall. This kinda meshes with what we have heard all along in terms of an asking price but it is my understanding that they have not officially tabled such an offer yet. Offers are apparently trickling in at this point but there is nothing that is absolutely blowing Murray away.

The word is that the Senators will have the 'best' offer in place heading into draft day and will then go to the Kings tomorrow and give them a chance to top it.

Just over 24 hours to go till the NHL Entry Draft and the Los Angeles Kings appear to still be in the driver seat in the Dany Heatley sweepstakes.

I don't want to overstate this but hang on tight Senators fans. It appears as though we are heading quickly towards defining moment in the history of this franchise.

I'll post any updates as I get them.

now reading this on the ottawa citizen, I am getting depressed.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/Heatley+offer/1734978/story.html

Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray is finding out that trading Dany Heatley is more difficult than he could have ever imagined. Like, maybe impossible.
On the eve of the NHL draft, three weeks after Heatley's demand became public on June 8, the Senators haven't had an offer. Not even one for the proverbial bag of hockey pucks.
Consequently, they don't believe they'll be able to trade Heatley this weekend, and even fear they'll be unable to deal him by July 1, when he must be paid a signing bonus of $4 million U.S.
That could lead to the possibility of Heatley having to play for the Senators next season, however unpleasant that may be for both sides.
Assistant general manager Tim Murray, speaking in place of Bryan on Thursday, acknowledged that's a distinct possibility.
"We're not giving him away because he has made the demand to be traded," he said.
"It has to be a good hockey deal or it won't get done.
"And then we just assume on Sept. 14 or 15 he'll show up at training camp, and be part of our team and go forward, and (be) a big part of our team, obviously."
Tim Murray said the organization was trying to stay hopeful. More than six teams have called asking about the parameters of a trade. But no one has called back.
"I know Bryan has talked to a few different teams and it doesn't seem like there's a serious offer there right at this moment," he said. "But again, I remember doing different deals with Bryan ... and they just come out of the blue in the last second.
"We just staying hopeful."
The rumours about possible destinations for Heatley have been knee-deep here, as speculation begins to swell for the draft. But the view among many is that the Senators are stuck. "This is not going to happen," one agent said Thursday afternoon. "His contract is unmovable."
Heatley's agents are also taking a beating from their colleagues for making the demand public, especially with the way it appears to be going horribly sideways.
"This is the most moronic thing I've ever heard," one agent said. "No responsible agent would ever do this for a client. You have to tell him that it's just going to kill the chances of making a deal."
The Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks are thought to be among those who have called Murray and offered various packages.
In fact, no one has offered anything. Some teams have even been calling reporters to make it clear they haven't bid, despite speculation. Heatley's contract is a stumbling block. He has five years left with an annual salary-cap hit of $7.5 million.
"I don't know what (the other teams) thinking," Tim Murray said. "They make the call. They ask us the parameters of a trade. We tell them basically what we're looking for, in NHL players, prospects or draft picks. Then it's up to them to decide if they're serious or not."
So far, they're not.

Doug MacLean was kind enough to inform Sportsnet viewers that Heatley will be receiving 4 million on top of 8 more million for the upcoming season.

What? Is he stupid? That would mean that Heatley's making $12 mil this coming year, which is not true.

By the CBA, when Heatley signed his deal, neither he nor any other player in the NHL can make more than $10 mil on the year. The maximum payout that can be made to a player was (and is) tied directly to the cap (20%), which was at $50 mil at the time.

On top of that, a quick examination of Heatley's contract refutes it: the pay structure is $10 mil in 2008-09, $8 mil in 2009-10, $8 mil in 2010-11, $8 mil in 2011-12, $6 mil in 2012-13, and $5 mil in 2013-14, for a total of $45 mil over 6 years.

Someone send MacLean a calculator and a connection to "the internets". If Dany Heatley makes $8 mil in 2009-10 (established fact), and he gets paid a $4 mil bonus on July 1st (also established fact), then the rest of the money owed to Heatley on the year must be $4 mil.

In addition, this $4 mil 'bonus' can't be a holdover or continuation from last year, because 1) Heatley's already made his $10 mil last year (the max a player could make in the calender year) and 2) July 1 is the beginning of the new calender year for the NHL, and so all payments made on or after July 1st go towards that year (and not the previous).

It just shows how powerful this misinformation is. It's absolutely out of control.

If this deal doesn't get done today, the asking price has got to go WAY up. If other teams are too stupid to pony up then Heatley stays a Senator and I'm fine with that.

Well, I'm sure the GMs Murray's dealing with are clear on the facts and the structure of his salary, and that's all that really matters. The Press can spin this any way they like and it don't matter Dung because they're not making the deals.

From Senschirp:

Bad News to Start the Day

(UPDATE-8:39 AM)- People are pointing to the $4 million bonus owed to Heatley as the potential stumbling block. I'm not buying that. If teams are interested they will make a move today.

I have read this a few places now but apparently the offers for Dany Heatley have been unimpressive to say the least.

Spoke to someone yesterday in Montreal who said that while the offers were of the lowball variety so far the Senators are hoping things pick up today.

Ill post updates as I get them.

I'd be disappointed if he did, but I'd be angry if Murray dealt him for scraps. Real angry.

Better to stay the course. If people expect to acquire Dany Heatley and pay him 4 million in salary AND give up nothing they can just Diddle off. Simple as that.

I am just wondering where all these good deals from the media went, maybe they were all just creations of the media, oh so frustrating, we went from being potentially set for years to come to being stuck with a sulky cry baby.

He'll realize nobody wants him and he better pull up his socks and play his best hockey for the Ottawa Senators if he really wants to move.

Better to be "stuck" with Heatley than get nickel-and-dimed by other teams.

Paul Kukla adds his news from two more media sources...

Sens May Just Keep Heatley

by Paul on 06/26/09 at 07:30 AM ET www.kuklaskorner.com

from Kevin Allen’s Twitter this morning,

Heard this morning that unless offers significanly improve the Senators may keep Dany Heatley. His $7.5 million cap too much for most teams.
added 8:17am, via Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

A well-placed source reports Ottawa GM Bryan Murray, under pressure to move Heatley before a $4 million up-front payment on his $8M salary for 2009-10 comes due on Wednesday, acknowledged yesterday he hasn’t received an offer of close to equal value for Heatley, who has five years and $35M remaining on a contract that comes with a $7.5M annual cap hit.
Though GM Glen Sather has backed himself into a corner with the cap that will remain within a couple of hundred thousand dollars of last year’s $56.7M following the NHLPA’s vote to trigger a five-percent bump to counteract a decline in revenue, the Blueshirts could absorb Heatley’s contract by moving Michal Rozsival ($5M cap hit) and not qualifying Nik Zherdev ($3.25M). Qualifying offers are due by 5 p.m. Monday.

Yep, gotta agree with that.

I think other teams need to start thinking a little more carefully about what kind of situation the Sens are facing. If we have Heatley on our roster as of July 1st, then we'll potentially miss out on the UFA season. Which means that we don't have much motivation to trade Heatley after that time frame, because any deal thereafter is going to have to be a hockey deal -- where the roster needs of each trading team are met and the salaries changing hands make sense.

If people think BM's asking for the moon now, imagine what he'll be asking for after 1) he's paid Heatley half his salary for the year, 2) he's lost the opportunity to try to sign the best UFAs, and 3) he's expecting players (and it will be plural) who can come to OTT and help replace Heatley's offence (so, probably a top 6 forward and a top 4 D, for starters).

The simple fact is that there is no better time to try to land Heatley than today. Between tomorrow and July 1st, not bad, but not as good. After July 1, almost impossible, I think. Maybe only the Sharks could make that kind of deal.

Can't imagine. Might make for a useful bluff... but I can't see Heatley agreeing to that.

I'll be so disappointed if we don't manage to move Heatley by July 1st... but, it's gotta be a good deal.
