They needed 6900 signatures to bring this to a referendum but fell way short. This means that the controversial deal to pay Greg Jamison (prospective buyer of the Coyotes) $300M over 20 years for arena management will not be brought to a vote. One more hurdle passed. He's expected to purchase the team Jan. 31.

Still, what's the average attendance and average ticket price? According to stats (attendance and average ticket) they had gate receipts around $17M. Add the $15M from the arena management and you are still way short of the cap floor. You still have parking and concession, of course, and the assistance from the league. But those numbers have to change. Thing is, I seriously question the figures in the links above (over 12K paid attendance and $36 average ticket price).

OK, the NBC deal is $200M, split 30 ways (not sure if it's that egalitarian in the boardroom) that's another $6.7M. Then I suppose they will get a nice slice of that revenue sharing pie, so maybe another $15M? Add it all up, and you're getting close to $45M. Not sure if that average ticket price included parking, but assuming they charge $5 and 1.5 per car, that's another $1.6-2M. Concessions? No idea, but you can easily spend another $20 per person, and that's got to be at least 50% profit after paying the staff, so throw in another nearly $5M. So we are talking $52M or somewhere in that neighborhood. So that should cover the payroll assuming the new floor is under $50M. But you still have a ton of expenses to cover (41 away games means 15*41 hotel rooms plus 30*41 tickets -- mostly plane).

Jamison essentially has guaranteed income from the city no matter what happens. He can operate the team with minimal expenses and laugh all the way to the bank...

$15M a year won't cut it, though.

Jamison needs to buy the Coyotes by Thursday, or else the new arrangement will expire... that deal was under the old councillors who wanted the 'Yotes to stay. Since then, new councillors have been appointed that are not as supportive...

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2013/01/28/coyotes_jamison__deadline_markham_arena_vote/

If he misses this deadline, things won't look so good for Phoenix staying in Phoenix.

Quebec City! MAKE IT 8!!!!

wouldn't that be grand! my buddy from pheonix just moved here and is waiting for his residency papers. I think he'd be the best present you could give him to have his team move to QC. (would also stop him from becoming a Cussing Habs fan)

I'm not sure why Jamison would put this off any more... he's got the deal he wants in place now. If it does go past Thursday, getting a similar deal with the new City Council will be pretty hard.

I still think they want to expand to 32 teams (why else would they not have realigned by swapping Detroit and Winnipeg, at least in the short-term). They won't have problems attracting investors in Quebec, but if the Phoenix franchise fails they may have a harder time getting *two* more clubs in the US.

would KC or seattle not buy in as expansions either? as much as I think Las Vegas is a terrible idea for an NHL franchise surely they'd have money to buy in?

I think if Phoenix fails it will be more difficult to raise money even in a place like Seattle.

No extension to be offered in the current deal... as per the Mayor:

http://ktar.com/22/1605591/Glendale-mayor-No-extension-to-be-offered-in-Phoenix-Coyotes-deal

Deal has to be done by Thursday or it's back to square one, again.

Lather, rinse and repeat...

Facepalm

What a joke. They can pay me to take the team if they want. I'll take all those guaranteed millions :D

In the mean time, Markham will move forward with their plans to build a 20,000 seat arena.

This whole Phoenix thing is... ThisJustIn! ... silly.
