I've had this idea, especially now with Gerber gone, where we could 'rent' out our cap space in exchange for some solid youth/picks. This wouldn't work for all teams, but certainly teams such as Chicago or Boston. What my idea is they give us some high priced expiring contract (à la Khabibulin/Fernandez) and a solid young player/picks and then we can give them a slightly lower priced player that could still help. This would also give them the cap relief to make another deal elsewhere to further improve their team.

Example:

Khabibulin and Barker to Ottawa for Vermette (although I'm still a huge fan of his.) or preferably Kuba or Kelly.

or

Fernandez and Joe Colborne (Wiercoch's teammate) for Kelly or Auld or Neil (and hope he signs back with us in the offseason.)

Mike Fisher has been mentioned in blog talk about Columbus and Edmonton.

The Edmonton 'deal' had Ladislav Smid and Robbie Schremp coming to Ottawa.

The CBJ rumour rentioned Rosti Kiesla or Kris Russell.

Hockey gossip being what it is, both the Oil and the Jackets could use Fisher in a playoff run... :pirat:

The CBJ talk seemed to have the most substance, as Hitch wants a center to play with Rick Nash. Fisher would work, and Columbus is close to Nashville and Fisher's lady Carrie Underwood. That part of Ohio is also very 'family values' oriented, and great hunting and fishing, both suitable to Mike's personality. Frankly I think Mike Fisher could totally thrive under Hitch.

Thanks Davetherave ,

Just saying I haven't heard anything on the team 1260 and they cover the Oils like no tomorrow. Heck even the die hard oil fans I work and live with haven't seen or heard anything about Fisher. All talk seems to be about Spezza or Vermette. Do you have link for the blog on fisher.

If Fisher for Horton is a pipedream, then Horton to Pittsburgh is impossible. Who would Pittsburgh offer that could be better than Fisher? Are they going to trade Staal, cause other than Crosby and Malkin, he's the only (forward) asset they have.

I don't even think Florida will move Horton anyways, their need was a #1 center and Horton's been moved back to center. And if they can show Bouwmeester they are prepared to commit to winning, they might be bale to keep him. They'll probably end up with another top 10 pick, adding to their already promising depth.

Staal for Horton is reasonable, yes.

Maybe I missed something in the follow-up posts, but if Nashville is considering giving up some of their depth on defense for some scoring, then isn't that ripe for Ottawa?

Fisher and/or Vermette (normally, that's solid secondary scoring) for one or two solid PMDs.

Fisher is near his lady. Don't know if Nashville is good for fishing, but it can't be too far from hunting territory.

And Vermette can try to teach them French, since their English drawl is totally incomprehensible to me.

Eh...

The names they're talking are Koistinen and Zanon. Not the Suters, Hamhuises or Webers (obviously).

I'd do it to get some relief under the cap, but I don't know if either of those two fit in our long-term plan.

Maybe target a defenceman prospect like Jon Blum or Cody Franson.

Tennessee has great hunting and fishing territory...and great motorcycle riding as well. 8) And they love their hockey team.

We should try to get Hamhuis out of Nashville.

Fisher and/or Vermette for Hamhuis, or Blum, or Franson, or some combination of one of those and/or picks. There, I've included every possible angle.

We don't have anything to offer beyond the top guys we don't want to deal. Hamhuis is too valuable to that team and at $2.something million per season, he's a steal for a team that lacks finances.

I'm for that. But I don't think Hamhuis is moving.

IMHO it will be really interesting to see what deals AREN'T made this year because, presumedly, GMs are worried about both the cap going forward, and the economic downturn.

On January 9th, the NHLPA's Paul Kelly did a very good interview with Michel Langevin on Montreal's CKAC Corus Sports Radio. Kelly underlined the concerns that may significantly change the way the NHL does business going forward.

He talked of 'cap casualties', veteran players who find themselves priced out of the market as the cap contracts and teams become more fiscally conservative. The interview also touches on contraction and the difficulties being reported in Phoenix and Tampa.

Here's a link to the podcast. Langevin's intro is in French but the interview is in English.

In a worst case scenario, some teams could go on a 'salary dump', or in the case of a franchise being folded or merged, the players would be subjected to a dispersal draft.

Several 'hardball' questions were asked of Kelly, and his responses are worth hearing.

That was a great interview, thanks very much for that. I've never heard of this station before (i'm originally from Ottawa).

I really liked how he asked real questions, and that they weren't pointed like those of that really annoying bearded guy on Sportsnet.

Thanks! BTW I'm following the subject closely and may open a new topic to discuss this aspect and other things that relate to the way the NHL may change over the next few years...

Thanks for the link, I bookmarked it right away.

Did you see the breaking news article on there??? They are saying that Stamkos could be on the move. They say that the Lightning aren't shopping him per se, but rather that if the right deal came along, they would be willing to move him. And they also say that two teams have asked about his availability... They say there is a whole article in the New York Daily News written by Larry Brooks on the subject.

Yes, and I posted the links to these articles in the new thread I just started "NHL: Too Much Monkey Business?"

More comedy from Tampa: the Oil want Vinny?

Lightning deny Oilers rumour

Sunday, January 25, 2009
TSN trade rumors - Page 2 Lecavalier_vinny_getty_400 Vincent Lecavalier. (Getty/file)

SPORTSNET.CA --

Tampa Bay Lighting general manager Brian Lawton is denying talk that Vincent Lecavalier is going to be dealt Monday to the Edmonton Oilers for a large package of players and draft picks.

According to a report Sunday by Sun Media’s Bruce Garrioch, the rumoured deal would have sent Lecavalier to Edmonton for three players, two prospects, two No. 1 picks and a third-rounder.

However, Lawton denies there was any deal on the table.

"It's just a pipe dream that people think we're going to trade him," Lawton told Sun Media..

"We're excited about the way our team is playing and I don't think it's fair to continue to talk about these things. I've said he's not going to be traded and he hasn't been traded. Somebody just asked me if he's going to be traded on Monday? No, he won't. Not Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or any other day for that matter ... He loves Tampa Bay and that's why he made the commitment he did (signing an 11-year, $85-million contract extension)."

I think these offers are way too much for VL.

On the Gerber front, there's a rumor Calgary has interest in the veteran goalie, but wish to send back similar salary, which Ottawa has little interest in doing. The rumored deal would send oft and currently injured D Rhett Wharrener to the Sens, whom was described by the analysts as a "Murray player".
