TRADE RUMOURS
- More reports out of New Jersey suggest that checking centre John Madden could be shuffled out of town, though the Devils could consider moving Madden's former tag-team partner Jay Pandolfo, too. The Newark Star-Ledger has the Devils interested in adding a defenceman.

- The Globe and Mail names the three players most likely to move at the deadline: Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay; Jay Bouwmeester, Florida; Tomas Kaberle, Toronto. The Globe also holds Maple Leafs RW Nik Antropov as having high value since elite scoring wingers Marian Gaborik (injured) and Ilya Kovalchuk (just named captain) aren't likely to move.

- According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Penguins are looking at Panthers winger Nathan Horton and the Senators are talking about dealing Mike Fisher after not drawing enough interest in Jason Spezza.

- The Ottawa Sun, in addition to noting that teams have called about Fisher, pegs Senators D Filip Kuba and RW Chris Neil as possible bait for the trade deadline. The Sun also has the Oilers inquiring about Fisher while the Blue Jackets have asked about Spezza.

- The Tennessean notes that, with Alexander Sulzer looking ready on the blueline, the Predators may be ready to sacrifice some depth on defence to improve their forward ranks.

- According to the Delaware County Times, the Philadelphia Flyers have expressed interest in Lightning D Paul Ranger.

- The Ottawa Sun has the Flyers looking to move Daniel Briere's long-term deal.

- The New York Post suggests that the Rangers have to start slashing the payroll to create more cap flexibility, noting that they pay too much to spare parts Petr Prucha, Aaron Voros and Dan Fritsche.

- According to the Ottawa Sun, there are rumours that the Atlanta Thrashers would send D Mathieu Schneider to the Sabres for RW Maxim Afinogenov. Of course, both will be free agents at season's end, so the Thrashers may want to get something for the future in any deal for Schneider.

- The St. Peterburg Times has the Lightning expressing interest in Leafs D Ian White.

My suggestions:

- Trade Smith, Phillips or Kuba to NJ for Pandolfo +.
- Trade Vermette to Nashville for defence.
- Trade Fisher for Horton (or sweeten the deal and include Bouwmeester)
- Trade Neil for pick

Pandolfo has really regressed.

No thanks.

And Fisher would never return Horton IMO.

Great subject cheers

The Globe & Mail, however, may have one of the worst hockey pages on the web. They are constantly behind the curve. David Shoalts is a joke. Only Duhatschek and McGregor are actually readable.

Have you checked out Spector's Hockey (Lyle Richardson's) take on the situation?

http://www.spectorshockey.net/

Lyle is much more reliable IMHO, as he does a much deeper evaluation of rumours vs reality than most columnists.

Also, his essay on the 'bubble teams' provides some very strong clues as to who will be the 'buyers' at the deadline.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/pgStory?contentId=9111616#sport=NHL&photo=9110418

Bruce Garrioch and Larry Brooks are notoriously long winded (IMHO Wayne Scanlan and Stan Fischler are much more informed in their respective cities).

In regards to your suggestions, my humble perspectives:

Nashville, looking for scoring, has no need for Vermette whose strengths are PK, playmaking and faceoffs; he is a much better fit in Chicago (most definitely) or Columbus (where Hitch can use him properly).

Your idea of Kuba or Phillips to NJ for Pandolfo might work for LouLam, but why would the Sens want a 35-year old PK guy who costs the same as Vermette?

IMHO Jacques Martin won't want Fisher's contract, and it's questionable whether MF will give him the scoring he needs.

It's been suggested the Sharks would like Chris Neil, and my suggestion is Alexei Semenov in return to add meanness to the blueline. Semenov's about the same age as Volchenkov, and cheaper and more mobile (and younger) than Jason Smith.

Just my 2 cents...

Pandolfo is aging and isn't what we need imo. Nashville has oodles of defensive talent at every level so trading some sorely need offense to them makes sense.

Fisher for Horton is a pipedream I think, and sweetening the deal to include Bouw just isn't happening without moving Heatley or Spezza as well. We just dont have enough sweetener otherwise.

I'd love to get a pick for Neil. If we could get a high 2nd in this draft, I'd be happy with the cap savings.

I think Kuba goes at the deadline as a rental. Asking for the same return as Campbell fetched the Sabres might be a little high though (S. Bernier and a pick they used on Tyler Ennis I believe). Likewise for Vermette, and anyone else we could get a decent return for. A guy like Donovan may even have some value.

I wouldn't trade Donovan. Useful 4th line player, leader, with a good work ethic.

There's no real reason to trade him, and his family is established in the area.

I agree he has all those attributes. Would you change your mind though if someone came along with a sweetheart offer?

If the Pens offered Malkin, I might consider it. Wink

But seriously, he doesn't PK, he's not a bruiser, no one's going to offer more than a 3rd or 4th for him and I'd rather keep him to set an example than deal him for a low pick.

Just wanted to add that I have not heard any talk of Fisher to Edmonton. I make every effort to listen to the team 1260 and one thing is certain if there is a rumor out there about the Oilers its discussed on air. I suspect this is just gossip.

I see your point. I'd move him, for the right return. He's pretty cheap and has played very well for stretches this season.

Mike Fisher has been mentioned in blog talk about Columbus and Edmonton.

The Edmonton 'deal' had Ladislav Smid and Robbie Schremp coming to Ottawa.

The CBJ rumour rentioned Rosti Kiesla or Kris Russell.

Hockey gossip being what it is, both the Oil and the Jackets could use Fisher in a playoff run... :pirat:

The CBJ talk seemed to have the most substance, as Hitch wants a center to play with Rick Nash. Fisher would work, and Columbus is close to Nashville and Fisher's lady Carrie Underwood. That part of Ohio is also very 'family values' oriented, and great hunting and fishing, both suitable to Mike's personality. Frankly I think Mike Fisher could totally thrive under Hitch.

I've had this idea, especially now with Gerber gone, where we could 'rent' out our cap space in exchange for some solid youth/picks. This wouldn't work for all teams, but certainly teams such as Chicago or Boston. What my idea is they give us some high priced expiring contract (à la Khabibulin/Fernandez) and a solid young player/picks and then we can give them a slightly lower priced player that could still help. This would also give them the cap relief to make another deal elsewhere to further improve their team.

Example:

Khabibulin and Barker to Ottawa for Vermette (although I'm still a huge fan of his.) or preferably Kuba or Kelly.

or

Fernandez and Joe Colborne (Wiercoch's teammate) for Kelly or Auld or Neil (and hope he signs back with us in the offseason.)

Thanks Davetherave ,

Just saying I haven't heard anything on the team 1260 and they cover the Oils like no tomorrow. Heck even the die hard oil fans I work and live with haven't seen or heard anything about Fisher. All talk seems to be about Spezza or Vermette. Do you have link for the blog on fisher.

If Fisher for Horton is a pipedream, then Horton to Pittsburgh is impossible. Who would Pittsburgh offer that could be better than Fisher? Are they going to trade Staal, cause other than Crosby and Malkin, he's the only (forward) asset they have.

I don't even think Florida will move Horton anyways, their need was a #1 center and Horton's been moved back to center. And if they can show Bouwmeester they are prepared to commit to winning, they might be bale to keep him. They'll probably end up with another top 10 pick, adding to their already promising depth.
