That's awful news. I have no idea how this kind of stuff happens. My condolences go out to his teammates, friends and family.

Didn't Mickey Renauld have an underlying heart condition? Also, was Cherry at the NYR prospect's camp? he would of been tested there. if not, i doubt russia's monitoring is acceptable

When the average attendance is under 4,000 and you're still paying players million-dollar salaries I suppose corners are being cut. Sad, but perhaps another reason for players to want to keep to the NHL.

RIP Cherepanov!

Always very sad to see a young player, no young person die like that in the prime of their lives.

this is a terrible thing and I realize how silly my post sound or reads, but I'm truly in shock... My deepest condolences to his family, friends, team mates and loved ones.

I am still reeling from hearing about Luc Bourdon... Unbelievable.

I didn't see the other thread... figured something like this would be in this section or at least "Just in"

Yeah it's surreal. Very tragic... too many young people dying way before their time.

This is so sad. I hate hearing about people dying in general, but when they're so young like this case, it just makes it all the worse. What a shame.

Reports from KHL are stating that Alexei Cherapanov (Rangers 17th overall pick, 2007) died despite aggressive resuscitation attempts. He had collapsed on the bench after a shift. He had no prior cardiac condition (reported, anyhow - further details are pending autopsy), and there was no reported incident that should have prompted this.

There is an entity called "commotio cordis" - if reports of a structurally normal heart are true, then this may have been the cause:

This should be merged with the thread already going on in the Rangers forum...

Hadn't gotten there yet - can I merge it, or do the mods do it?

Heater - I just started one (didn't see this thread) in the "This Just In" section.

There's a couple of links, plus ...

Can you merge it?
