Meh, he feels how he does and he is adamant that for $5M the Oilers could not get a better player (at "0.88 PPG") that actually wants to play in Edmonton.

Not like Hemsky is going to make a huge difference for the Oilers. They need a lot more than just him, and have to wonder if getting a few pieces in return for Hemsky would have helped that more than he would.

HAhahaha.... here's what Mike Modano had to say about the signing:

"Mike Modano ‏ @9modano Reply Retweet Favorite ยท Open
2 yrs/10 million for hemsky. Scored over 20 goals twice in 9yrs.. WTF..!!?"

Why did the Oilers do this? They have zero idea how to build a franchise properly, it's actually comical. That should have garnered a 1st round pick easily in this weak market. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Why is Modano pointing to his goal totals when Hemsky is known to be a playmaker?

Meh, Spezza's a playmaker and still can score 30+.

Technically, a playmaker is a guy that can set up the play... hence "making the play". He can finish what he starts Razz

Point is: $5M for an oft injured player who has been the target of criticisms for years is odd.

Have to think Edmonton figured they couldn't do any better in the free agent pool or they figured keeping what they had was worth more than what other could offer.

Another ex-NHLer speaks out:

@9modano SERIOUSLY!! that guy barely shows up half the time. What a joke. Low budget teams have to overpay guys just to get to the floor.

All hail Jamie Rivers, the epitome of what it is to be an NHL'er.

meh...they don't need the cap space... they need an overload of offensive production to overcome their inevitable and long standing holes on d and in the crease. Hemsky as a secondary scorer is a luxury they can afford.

It wouldn't be about the money for me, it would be about keeping a guy that doesn't fit into the long term plan for the team when you could trade him in for a bevy of picks/prospects and try to remedy why you're still one of the worst teams in the league. Hemsky adds some nice secondary offence for sure - and the price doesn't matter in terms of $$ and cap, but look at Murray, he had the stones to move guys we could have potentially kept in order to fill up the prospect cupboard in the organization.

To be fair the Oilers it may have been that team just weren't offering enough value. A guy like Tuomo Ruutu could also be an example of that, as defenceman have been much more coveted then forwards so far (minus maybe Carter).

That's a fair point. I don't understand how that's possible personally though with only a few good options out there though. There's Nash, Carter, Ruttu, Hemsky basically with 2 of those off the market and the other with a 5 team list. Thought Hemsky would get a nice package, guess I was wrong.

Damn, Nail Yakupov is picking up so much nice nice on Twitter. He's got young hotties asking him to call them, and asking how pretty/hot they are on a scale from 1-69... it's pretty lame on their part, but it's insight into the world of stardom.
