Kessel's been demoted to the Leafs 3rd line. If this gets ugly, this could be (if not already) a horrible thing for the Leafs.

Obviously there was and still is a lot of mixed reaction towards the high priced trade Brian Burke made with the Bruins to acquire Kessel, and if this doesn't work out, especially now with Kessel's play obviously being called into question, this could be the end for Burke and Wilson.

No way do the Leafs get close to what they paid for Phil if they tried to trade him.
Wow... that's not going to go over well in Leafs Nation. The media is going to eat this alive...

The media guys on twitter are all over it trying to diffuse the situation. They are saying that Kessel does not want out of Toronto but that he certainly did throw Wilson under the bus. They are also expecting a retraction or for Kessel to downplay the quote tomorrow.

LEAFS' KESSEL ON HEAD COACH: 'ME AND RON DON'T REALLY TALK'

After being benched for part of Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel showed some frustration Sunday after being demoted to the club's third line by head coach Ron Wilson.
Kessel was asked if his head coach had pulled him aside to talk about any issues.
"No, me and Ron don't really talk. That's all I have to say about that," replied Kessel.
Kessel's scoring slump has reached 10 games, and the winger was placed on a line with Joey Crabb and Darryl Boyce.
"I don't really know what to say about that any more," said Kessel of
his slump. "I'm trying. Obviously, it's not going right. It might not
be working out here. What are you going to do?"

Wilson addressed the decision to shuffle Kessel's spot on the forward lines.
"Phil hasn't scored in 10 games, and I think in that period he's been
minus-7," explained Wilson. "So we're trying to find some balance, and I
think Darryl can help the line defensively."

Kessel, who was the last pick in the NHL All-Star fantasy draft last
month, is minus-22 this season with 19 goals and 15 assists for the
struggling Leafs.

"I don't know. Maybe it's just not working out, I guess," explained
Kessel of his line assignment.
"Who knows? I didn't get anything going.
Maybe it's time for a change or something. Who knows?"

Wilson targeted the 23-year-old's defensive play as a contributing reason for shuffling his star scorer's ice time.
"When he's so focused on scoring goals, he's forgetting the other
part of the game," Wilson said. "If the puck's not going in, and that's
all you're focused (on), a lot of times you'll end up not being in the
positions you should be in. And that goes for any player...if you're
struggling to score, don't be scored against."

The Leafs return to action Monday night when they host the Atlanta Thrashers.

I can see those statements being redirected to the situation of that game and not in general... like maybe Kessel will say that he meant Ron and him don't talk (during games)? Or about a particular discussion? And he could easily say that "it's not working out here" refers to his role on the line?

Very interesting times in Make Belief nation. Just when you think we had it rough in Ottawa....

Does Wilson last the week?

He should listen to Cherry. He broke it down very clearly -- Kessel is not shooting the puck hard. He's getting the chances, but then just mildly pushing it toward the goalie.

He also looked overweight at the ASG.

I've said it before... Kessel = Heatley.

Certainly looks like it...

It's like déjà vu.

We should re-sign Choochoo and deal him to the Leafs for Kessel.

I don't want Kessel. And yeah he's always been known for being chubby. Leafs should have signed Wellwood to play with him.

Kessel and Spezza together intrigues me, but it also scares me. If the Leafs manage to land a true top-line center in the off-season, I think we'll see a whole different Kessel next season.

Well, Toronto could try sending a package of say Kaberle + prospect to a team with an abundance of C's. Or they could go the free agent route.

Tim Connolly, Brooks Laich, Comrie? Not too many guys out there other than the first two and Richards, who I didn't even mention as I don't think he will be available. I don't even think Laich will be a free agent when July 1st rolls around.

I could see the Leafs trying to get Dubinsky out of NY, for maybe a d-man +?

By all accounts, Kessel is not a good "locker room guy", so it doesn't surprise me that he's speaking out like this. The guy played with Marc Savard (before he had headaches) and lit it up. He's now playing in Toronto, with essentially nobody, so obviously he'll be frustrated. He's getting crapped on by a coach who can't give him any decent linemates.

And let's just nip the Kessel to Ottawa talk in the bud. No WAY will that happen. Toronto won't trade him. Imagine the PR nightmare.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks it will happen.

...although, Spezza WOULD be the perfect centre for Kessel!!!

The concept is intriguing... for sure... but would we find ourselves in another Heatley fiasco? And for the price that was paid? Hells no.

Agreed. Kessel is the kind of guy this team needs to steer well clear of.

What does Burke do now though? Gonna be hard to spin this...
