If I were to compare him to someone today, it would be Getzlaf. Hasn't got quite the same hands, yet, but he's got that kind of ability. Not as good, but on his way there.

I wonder if this quasi-Getzlaf would make Spezza expendable?

Horton, hmmm. Big body, tough as nails, hits, fights, scores... a power forward for the most part.

The skating isnt quite there for to be a Nash.

Tough to compare him to anyone right now. Best way to describe him, and potential 1st line power forward.

I've heard of Horton being compared to Nash. I think he would solve our 2nd line center issue. I think you'd have to move Fisher to make it happen though.

Moving Vermette and his 2.8 million is good enough considering Horton costs 4 million.

He's actually been quoted as saying he'd rather retire than play for the Panthers any more, which has prompted more than a few people to call him a 'loser'.

Here's the problem for the Panthers...he still has 3 years left after this at 12 million dollars. Talk about something that you don't need around your team.

So what's next? Obviously a trade, that much is all but done, but where?

The Ottawa Senators.

For whom? Antoine Vermette.

At first glance it wreaks of an unfair trade for Florida - and I would imagine there would have to be something else added to the mix, but the rumours continue to circulate that Martin would like to get his hands on Vermette - and unload Horton.

2 + 2 sometimes really does equal 4.

Antoine Vermette and a 2nd round pick for Nathan Horton.

I have a feeling this may actually happen. But then...I also had a feeling I'd win the lottery last week.

Nathan Horton just shot Martin in the foot with comments like that. Martin will have to take below market for Horton I think.

I'd love to see it happen, and if it did, it would be a lopsided trade even if Florida saves 1.2 million. I just don't think Vermette would do it alone. Possibly Vermette and a pick or prospect.

Yeah, that certainly works, too.

Horton's big advantage at the moment is that he's a good centre, AND a good winger. But really, when you're comparing a guy to Getzlaf (C) or Nash (LW), it's all good news, isn't it? Smile

That's a good point, Cap'n. Where/when, exactly, did Horton say those comments? Are they in print?

And now, Is it the moment when I suggest another team is going to offer a better player than Vermette? Razz

Can they offer anyone cheaper though? That will be a pretty big consideration.

Horton's contract is reasonable, and signed long term. It also makes people on the current roster a lot easier to move.

I hear you. I think the main hope with this kind of proposal is that Martin still has a man-crush on Vermette. Otherwise, I agree, there are other teams who should be able to out-bid us.

If Martin wants to save money, he should deal Stillman back to us for Kelly. Razz

Any way to deal Fisher and Vermette for Bouwmeester and Horton?

Would solve A LOT of problems for us.

Yes it would (complete with a re-signing of Bouwmeester).

It doesn't solve Florida's money problems though. I think we're stuck with Fisher for the duration of his contract.

To be honest the way I read Heater's post I assumed it was in print somewhere and was common knowledge but I don't know for sure.
