I'm talking about the cross check and game misconduct he received. It was so unnecessary . I think the fan base is going to get sour on his recklessness. There was zero need to smash Dubois in the face
Man, I know we've enjoyed being negative for the past 2 to 3 years, but this is what you're talking about after that great game last night? We had a lineup without our top guys and beat a Winnipeg team that had a lot of theirs in their lineup. Grieg had a beauty goal, but we're talking about his crosschecking penalty? Yeah it was unnecessary and dumb, but that's a lot easier to tone down in your game than it is to learn the confidence and skill that he displayed when he scored. Our lineup is being assembled to be tough to play against. I don't see Grieg taking too many of those penalties in the regular season if he's on the team (he probably won't be).
Anyway, terrific game last night. The Sens were super entertaining to watch. I hope that DJ and Pierre learned from last season, where we overplayed the vets and sucked hard at the beginning. It's time to play the kids, which includes Pinto starting as the #2 centre. That guy played his Donkey off at both ends of the ice last night. I don't see anyone outperforming him.
Gustavsson also played very well, Formenton was good, Brannstrom looked OK out there...a lot of positives.
Agree with all this, as well as Ennis and Thomson being good.
You're right. I shouldn't be focusing on the negatives. Pinto 100% stood out as the best player for the Sens. I thought Thomson looked excellent - or at least exceeded my expectations. Gustavsson was great, I thought Mete and Brannstrom both played well, and Formenton was noticeable too. His goal came out of nowhere... Ennis was a spark-plug and I can't see him not making the team.
I saw lots of chatter online about Sokolov looking good. To be honest I didn't really notice him all that much. Same with Jarventie. But that could be because Pinto and the others were just that much better. I thought Watson looked okay too. Definitely noticed him on the PK which I expect to be much improved this year. Forsberg looked really good too. The first goal he let in he didn't have a chance... Otherwise he looked calm and composed and wasn't chasing the play.
Pinto reminded me a lot of Stone with the way he was able to turn the puck over. There were a few times where he got hit and the player bounced off of him, and his puck possession behind the net was pretty impressive too. I suspect he will project to a Mike Fisher type - good two-way player who can get down the ice and be reliable in his own end. I suspect he won't have Fisher's toughness but will be a better scorer/playmaker. I know it's the pre-season but Winnipeg iced a pretty good lineup (Ehlers, Dubois, Dillon, etc). With the exception of Ehlers, Pinto was the best player on the ice for both teams.
I thought J. Brown was the worst d-man on the ice. Wasn't even close on several 2 on 1 plays (blocking the pass), missed some key zone exit passes, etc. I thought every other d-man did a much better job breaking the puck out of the zone.
My point about Greig is that I think he is going to be polarizing. He's going to score a goal like the one he scored last night and then he's going to take a bad penalty. Apparently he is going to have a hearing today and may be suspended. I like that Ottawa is building a tough team to play against but I am not sure I like the 'goon' mentality with him, Boucher, etc. Anyway, I hope he can correct his game and learn how to tow the line. It's too bad that he took the penalty so early in the game. I am not sure who watched the whole game or what the highlights showed but he also had a partial breakaway and got slashed on the hands which led to a PP right after he scored his goal. Had he scored there we'd be talking about this guy making the team - instead he missed over half the game and may miss another. I can see Ottawa keeping him around for a 9 game trial. I am not sure if he is AHL eligible or what the rule is this year but he is far too good for the WHL.
