No. Salary retention happens when teams are at the cap. The Sens have no such worry and actually should be getting more value in return when they take on salary for teams. Don’t spin Dorion for anything other than the Dung he is.

I just think the return difference is irrelevant in this specific case as the picks are close enough in value to get worked up over. Especially for a player labelled as trash by many two seasons ago.

Honestly the De Melo return is fair. He has 10 points, no goals, and plays sub-20 minutes a night. Winnipeg isn't in a playoff spot so realistically the difference between a late 2nd and a mid 3rd isn't much (20-25 spots lets say). We also have a tendency to overvalue our players, and when we traded for De Melo, he was a throw-in that happened to be better than advertised. But he's the type of player that will sign an over-valued contract and we'll never hear about him again (see: Dzingel)

He has 7 goals in 259 games and has 1 playoff assist. Let's not try to squeeze blood from a stone here. There were better options available than De Melo, and there was zero chance he was re-signing in Ottawa.

I don’t get your point in that case. He paid what what he is supposed to pay as per every trade that has happened...except for one. That trade being the price that Dorion set for DeMelo which is markedly lower than any trade that has happened thus far.
